Considering that there is so much warning around the forums for not hacking (actually mainly skidude), how does a mass ban work? Do they update warden, go through a large patch, then they can start tracking people down the next day? Or do they just ban out of the blue? If they just ban all of a sudden and w/o an update, then why would we get banned using stings if we didnt get banned before?

My friend used stings and got banned, im pretty sure he did something wrong but i'm still on the paranoid side, so just confirming this first^^

A mass ban works by Battle.net using "Warden" to detect users if they are using any 3rd party hacks. If there is a mass ban, thousands (at about the same time) of D2 players will have their account closed followed by a number (8) by it. Then a message would appear on their main site explaining the reason and the number of accounts temporarily banned/permanently banned.

Warden is constantly updated but Battle.net won't tell us.

As of right now, you can be banned at any time if you are detected of using a 3rd-party hack.

For your friend, it is most likely because he used the "plugin" version of Stings maphack. How do you know if your using it? If you see Red X's to locate monsters, name of doors, shrines, color, etc., you are using the plugin version and you will have a very high chance of being banned. Make sure that your friend followed http://www.blizzsector.co/hacks-dupes-guides/28964-siriss-guide-stings-maphack.html right. Make sure that he had it setup like the screenshot. Under "Install Plugin" it should be checked "Disable Autoload". If you are still concerned about using it, I would use the "stings mh lite version" insted of the regular one.

Thanks, answered my questions very clearly! But several more things, has there been a mass ban after every ladder reset? and how long after reset did that take place? and why hsould i use lite if im concerned, its less detectable?

lite, in a more simple term, loads the map and deloads, making it nearly invisible. making it almost impossible and impossible as of yet for warden to detect you in time.

a mass ban is random and one happened some 6months+ after there was a patch. or atleast im pretty sure...

then why dont all people just use lite?

because they download the full not thinking theres a lite and they dont know how to use it so they use the plug-in on accident.
