One such announcement has drawn the ire of players, namely the 150 badges of honor required for certain items.

Community Manager Drysc (http://wow.qj.net/tags/drysc/12820) pointed out that the new items are progression-aiding items. Solo or small group players will probably want to pass on these because its going to take a lot of time. However, higher level characters with nothing to do with the badges will find that the items are perfect for alts that need some help leveling.

While Drysc makes a pretty good point regarding the items, it doesn't change the fact that those who wish to pick up the new gear have a long grind ahead of them. Still, World of Warcraft is all about choices, you can choose not to get the items and just play the game your own way.
