My computer restarts. - Foog - 04-19-2005

Every day, 5-10 times, at random points in time, my computer restarts. I built it myself. If you need to know parts ill tell you. If i can remember. It's not an overheating problem because it doesn't do it when im running many programs or working it hard at all. It does it, say, when i click on a link in FF or sometimes when I'm just sitting, not even moving th emouse, reading a webpage. Might it be a power supply issue? i have a starlogic 400 watt power supply, brand new. thanks.

I would trouble shoot the graphics card, cpu and PSU to start and then if those all check out move on to the motherboard. Any of those things could be going haywire and causing a restart.

Right-click on my computer ---> Properties ----> Advanced ----> Startup and recovery ---> Settings
---> Under System Failure, uncheck "Automatically Restart". If its a software problem, like I think it is, you should get a BSOD instead of a reboot. Write down what it says and get back to me.

I did that, now i just need it to restart? and what's a bsod? Thanks, chesh.

Blue Screen Of Death. Basicly the screen turns blue and it says what error it had.

Here is an example of one. http://weblog.noviomagum.com/subdomains/weblog/images/bsod.jpg

blue screen of death, it means

okay, well here we go- it just rebooted and i got this:

blah blah windows shut down to prevent harm etc.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
blah blah check recently installed hardware and software etc.
blah blah check all BIOS settings etc.
Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0x00000000A (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x8051e106)
Dumping physical memory
Dumping complete

and that's it. What does this mean?

My computer restarts. - CheshireCat - 04-19-2005

well, the "blah blah blah" doesnt exactly shed light on the situation, but it looks to me like you have a resource conflict. Look in your device manager and see if there any devices with a ! on it.

My computer restarts. - Foog - 04-19-2005

the blah blah blah thing is the same thing it always says for trouble shooting, "you should check your recently installed hardware and software" and all that, the same thing as usual.
and it says to check my BIOS settings for errors, it always says that too.

Still check for IRQ conflicts.

thats sux

now cmon. i know it sux. what did you saying that do? i'm so confused.

buh. i've told you before that it most likely is a power supply issue. didnt know you had a 400 watt though. anyway, check this out and see if you're going to need more power than you're supplying. add all this up and then multiply by 1.8. that should be your power that you need. i added it up and im not sure if 400 will cut it.

agp vid card (which i think you have): 30-50w
floppy: 5w
each optical drive: 10-20w
7200 rpm hard drive: 10-15w
10000 rpm hard drive: 15-20w
case/cpu fans: 3w each
RAM: 25w per 256MB
your processor: 90w

and if i knew what IRQ was, i might have more to say, but i dont.

Yea ok(foog)thanks for your scarcasim, but any way what sinner said hes right becuase for DOOM III you need a grafics card that uses 500 watts so you may have an indufficent power source

My computer restarts. - Kingsrookie - 05-10-2005

doom 3 needs a lot of processing power so upgrade the power source and you should be fine

Do you even realize how wrong that statement is? The fact that Doom 3 is graphics intensive has NOTHING to do with the power supply. Beyond that the fact that Doom 3 needs alot of processing power has NOTHING to do with the power supply. What is true is that the newest and bestest processors and graphic card setups are VERY power hungry, espceially if you overclock them, requiring much larger and more powerful power supplies.

i went over a similar problem like this with chesh and it seems one of my three fans stopped working and, as a result, my computer was getting hotter then normal and restarting itself. i suggest u buy a new fan system, and some more ram wouldnt hurt either.

My computer restarts. - Foog - 05-12-2005

So...get a better cooling system, get a better power supply...?

My computer restarts. - TMP - 05-12-2005

Could be a problem with your RAM also.

This also could help. http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/8131.html

Dont forget that you need the video card too Wink and I just want to know something why sometime on doom 3 my game **** up and close?
