cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-01-2005

ok what does all this mean. i'm on outpost lookin at motherboards and cpu's and they're divided up into socket groups. anyone care to 'splain what these numbers mean and what i should be looking for.

What are you building the computer for? Socket is like the model for the CPU, so higher is usually better. If you don't know, the CPU goes into the socket on the motherboard, which is the reason the version always starts with socket.

cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-01-2005

i know where the cpu goes lol i just don't know what the numbers meant. but i'm building this strictly as a high performance gaming computer. tell me if this looks like a good builder its motherboard and cpu for like 220 bucks.

What's your budget? The CPU is good, but I wouldn't get that motherboad. Get a DFI or ASUS or something. Don't worry too much about socket compadability; it's easy tell what socket the motherboard is compadable with. check out newegg.com too, they usually have the lowest prices.

cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-01-2005

well the price on that setup is about as high as i wanna go. if i buy the processor just as is it'll be more expensive. what's wrong with that board tho?

I've barely heard of that brand. Also Via is the worst chipset created, I would avoid it at all costs (speaking both personally and from other's experiences). What is your total budget?

Model: 3200+

I would email them and see what you actually get. A 3200 is much more believable, since a 3500 by itself is around 200 bucks. In which case that is not as good a deal.
I would suggest something like a 3200 and a nice motherboard from newegg, would cost your 20-30 bucks more but it'd def. be worth it. I think I was gonna say something else, but I forgot :/

cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-01-2005

my budget is whatever i can afford and still get a good gaming computer. i'd say no more than 250-300 for processor/motherboard. has to have AGP slot and and at least 2gb ddr capacity. and at least 2.2ghz processor speed.

and what have you heard/expirienced with VIA? i've got a VIA chipset and i have no complaints other than my computer being a little outdated. but i can still play some high end games on it right now.

Have you messed around with it at all? I guess my opinions torwards things are going to be different than the average user as an overclocker, but still, even when I didn't OC that chipset was a nightmare. It wasn't stable at all, and was a pain to get it to cooperate with my Sata drive. The NF3 chipset has been a dream compared to it. But anyways, 2.2GHZ is gonna be hard to get for 250 w/ motherboard, at least for socket 939. If you went socket 754 it would be cheaper, and although it wouldn't be as upgradable, AMD has already release info for Socket F or whatever their new one is gonna be, so 939s days are already numbered.
DFI nF4 Ultra-Infinity Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD MotherboardAMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor
That comes out to be 296.99, a little cheaper than I thought.

ok here's what i have picked out. i wanted to run it by you guys to see if this is a good choice, let me know soon so i can order it all today.

cpu/motherboard socket ? - 5|*42 - 12-03-2005

Dont' get a 200 dollar CPU and a 68 dollar motherboard. You'll be much better off with a 3200 and a nice motherboard (like this. You won't miss the 200mhz that much, and you could just OC it up there with a 30 dollar HSF if you really want to.
Also, the RAM you got is PC2700, you should get some PC3200 (like this).

cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-03-2005

well i'm gonna keep the 2.2 because thats what's required to play lost coast. i'd rather just buy a high end processor and not mess with it than buy a low end and overclock. but i updated my list with that motherboard you showed me lemme check out the ram situation again and i'll see if i wanna go that route.

ok 2x sticks of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820145026

plus the motherboard you showed me and the 3500. total price is 383 shipped and i'm gonna charge it. so shoot me one last confirmation on my choices and i'll place the order Big Grin

cpu/motherboard socket ? - 5|*42 - 12-03-2005

That shold be fine. I'd go ahead and order. What VC are you thinking about?

cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-03-2005

i just bought a Geforce BFG 6200 the other day. i'm gonna stick with it for a while. crap i just looked at that motherboard and its not AGP... my card is agp X.|

The search continues!

cpu/motherboard socket ? - 5|*42 - 12-03-2005

Yea, I wondered if you already had a card or not. If you don't want a PCIE motherboard, you can either go with socket 754, or use a 939 motherboard with AGP. There are a few here, but not nearly as many as there would be with 754. I would personally recommend you go with socket 754 as you'll have a better selection of motherboards, and also it will probably be cheaper.

i know this can be counted as spam, but go ahead and warn me if u want, i just wanna say that spaz, u are a god, and i wish i knew u 2 months ago because i did an intel vs amd paper and it woulda been easier with u lol, and if u went with a intel processor, make sure its a 6xx series not a 5xx that way it will support 64bit applications, and u can upgrade to windows vista when it comes out Smile, see i do know a few things

cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-08-2005

lol intel is a great processor... FOR ME TO POOP ON XD

nah i'm gonna stick with the athlon 64 fx. i was gonna order it all last week but they ran my credit for the 90 days no pay thing and they didnt' approve me D'OH... i thought i had better credit than that. oh well maybe i need an actual credit card.

DFI Lanparty is another good MOBO:

cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-09-2005

damn that would be nice to have if i had the money. thats like $40 cheaper than the motherboard, processor, and ram that i was lookin at combined.

cpu/motherboard socket ? - 5|*42 - 12-09-2005

dustoid4, glad you find me useful Smile
As for your search for computer parts, did you decide if you want to go w/ socket 754 or 939? You probably won't notice much of an improvement between the two, and the biggest reason to go 939 is upgradability, but since you're limited to a AGP slot there's really nothing to upgrade to that'd be worth it in a few years.

cpu/motherboard socket ? - Deadlyy-Guy - 12-09-2005

well i eventually want to upgrade to one of these uber pci-e cards and whatnot, but i think i'm just gonna wait till after christmas and see how much $$$ i get. (can't spend any of my work money on it cuz i gotta save up for a deposit to move out)
