Actually, it's 137GB, and it was overcome in SP1A, so if all 250 gigs are not seen at once just run windows update and you'll be fine.

Installing SP2 should allow windows to recognize any size hard drive. If it still doesn't work, you may need to download a partition program, and manually extend the partition from 137GB to however big the drive is.

Anything over 137GB will only be recognized as 137GBs, if you install with an old enough version of XP.

i think this isnt a windows problem, but a NTFS problem.
As we all know, well except ignorant fools, a hard drive formatted as FAT can only have about 2gbs of space (somewhere around that). I am not sure, but the NTFS formatted hardrive may have such a limit as well, perhaps the limit is 137gb? Either way, dividing ur harddrive into two partitions should not be a problem, it may even be a good thing. I seriously doubt u have any single program that will require more than 137gb of space for its installation. I mean, u could decide to make one hardrive for all work related things (studys as well) and the other for all entertainment related things. Well the important thing is, u like to pirate stuff and 250gb divided into two partitions will surely meet ur pirating needs =)

But people (inlcuding myself) have large partitions w/ NTFS. I installed a version of XP that has SP1A, and all 200 gigs were recognized no problem. Although I am running a SATA drive, but using the same disk I installed XP on a 160 IDE drive for my friend, and again all got recognized right away.

Yeah, I could partition the 160 I have on this fine but back when I was trying my 250 it would not work. And this was with SP1A disc.

That's weird. Where both hard drives the same type, or were they different (like SATA, IDE, ect)?

IDE. Both were going to be NTFS formatted. With the 250 it would partition but then it would copy the XP files to the hard drive but upon reboot it wouldn't go the GUI part of XP.

I doubt you did this, but I'll ask it anyways: You did let the comp boot from the HDD after it rebooting from copying the installation files on to the HDD, right? ie, you didn't boot into the installation CD again?

I sure did. But I got it all figured out now so I don't give a shit.

Ha, just out of curiosity, how did you get it to work?

Please help, trying to use a 250 gb hard drive with XP! - Tool - 12-12-2005

Well I called tech support for XP and my motherboard manufacturer because I thought it was a problem with one of those because my hard drive had been a slave drive on my computer before. After countless failures there I went to Target with my dad and bought a Western Digi 160 GB for 90 bucks (which is now 40 bucks at Best Buy... Damn it...) and it worked just fine.
