Yeah, I've always played vanilla D2, but I was wondering if it was possible to make a single-player character available on Battle.net in any way/shape/form?

You can play on Open BattleNet.
When you enter Diablo II, choose Other Multiplayer, and then choose Open Battlenet.
Lots of hacked characters on open...
As for closed battlenet, sorry but there is no way to use single player account on there. It is a lot better though becasue you don't have charcters running around in godly made-up items and 99 in all skills.
