My Comp situation - A.D. - 06-13-2006 Ok, let me give you some background as to how I came about this problem. I work at a place that gets new computers every so often, so we wind up with outdated computers sitting in our warehouse. You can put your name on a list to get these systems, yet the keep a couple spares for backup incase something happens. Anyways, my name was next on the list for a new system. This was about a year ago when my good computer killed by a power surge.mad: Well, we have this new guy who starts working here and he gives my manager some BS about how his wife needs the computer for her work, I know this is BS becuase he brought it up that he needed a computer now to check his Myspace! And he ended up getting this computer even though I had been on the list for several months!!! mad: So he takes it home, and then I get a phone call saying he needs my help, that his computer won't start up. So I go over and mess around with it a little, it'd boot up just fine but when it got to the win98 loading screen it would freeze up and you'd get a bizarre graphical glitch (like it was trying to run a much higher resolution then it was capable of). So with no intention of actualy fixing it I say I'll take it home and work on it.devilish: Well it turns out the monitor he was using was an old-school flatscreen that had went bad, and the computer worked wonderfully (in spite of peing a p900 with only 50-something megs of ram) so I told him he was having graphic-board problems, even though the graphics were built into the motherbord. He was pretty computer inept so he just accepted the fact he'd have to either buy a new computer or keep his name on the list like the rest of us. So I used this computer for several months, I upgraded it a little bit so it would play d2 without a whole lot of stuttering. This went on for four months until he asked to have his old junk computer back, as I'm sure he was beginning to suspect it actually worked. Well, not to be outdone, I'd make it so his computer would be legitmately messed up even if he had a different monitor. So I went through and deleted everything I had installed. Goodbye Diablo 2 + Accounts, goodbye Worms World Party, Goodbye Total Annihilation and the 3 gigs of mods, goodbye counterstrike, goodbye 2.5 gigs of music. So going from past expereince, I took every file that was in the C:/ and deleted them. I didn't delete any of the windows/program files directories, I just deleted everything that was in that particular spot. Files like Command.com, or Config.cfg etc etc. smartass2 Well, I take it back to work to give it to him, and he just tells me nevermind! mad: So when I boot it up it brings up the "Invalid System Disk etc etc" error, the error where you typically insert a boot-disk and reinstally windows with. Well, I asked my manager if we still had these old disks and they seem to have got lost, so is there any way I can restore those old files to get it operational again or am I just SOL? My Comp situation - Bartender - 06-13-2006 My dad this this once, if this is a system file, he went to the the screen where you can type commands and he typed in something like /restore and he got the system files back. My Comp situation - A.D. - 06-13-2006 You know, now that I think about it's a HP computer that has a lot of features built into the Bios, I wonder if there is a restore I can use through that. Anyhow, any additional help would be vastly appreciated. My Comp situation - tigeroip - 06-13-2006 i think u can download an ulmtimate boot cd for windows, google it an dull find it should work although im not sur eif it works for any other os than xp My Comp situation - A.D. - 06-13-2006 I'll give it a shot tigerop, thanks for the suggestion & plz keep them coming. Edit : How the hell did you become a vet, tiger? My Comp situation - Tool - 06-13-2006 Well, normally I would go and find you a torrent link for Windows 98 so you could just burn the software onto a CD... But I can't seem to find one. I'll keep looking, though. My Comp situation - MOV ECX - 06-13-2006 You can get win 98 SE from limewire, i did it a couple of day's ago My Comp situation - L4E - 06-13-2006 AlmostDeadly Wrote:I'll give it a shot tigerop, thanks for the suggestion & plz keep them coming. by posting 601 illegible posts and like the guy above me said, u can probably find win 98 on limewire, although dont forget to scan for viruses cuz theres been alot lately.. My Comp situation - WarriorOfD2X - 06-13-2006 i suggest you buy a new pc, i gave a link to a very good priced low cost computer. it would do much better for you than that 50mb ram pos. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2108747&CatId=0 My Comp situation - wm_hunter - 06-13-2006 L4E Wrote:by posting 601 illegible posts I have never ever been wrong using this method of pre-virus testing. LOOK AT THE FILE SIZE! No hacker is going to take 24 hours of PC time to change a 24 KB virus to look like it is 100 mbs large. To add that much useless code would take that long. It is good to have a good virus scanner, but just download smart and you should be ok. |
