you should beable to copy it and paste as long as d2 is not running

hit:: ctrl + alt + delete and make sure do d2loader or game or something d2 is not running

You would be looking for Game.exe when you look at the task manager. It is the most common one to be crashed and not ended properly.

What happens when you try to copy the file from the CD into the Diablo II folder?

use the original cd to copy the files from. not a copied cd of it. most copied cds of some games usually has a 3% corruption in some files and one that its most common for is the music and the validation part of an ini that shows its the original. My cousin goes through the same thing every time.

im not using a copied cd...never said i was :p

Additional Comment:
someone asked what it says when the error appears it says

"cannot copy d2xmusic.mpq: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

If you're trying to use d2loader with out you're disk do the following.

Copy your regular d2music.mpq
Paste it to the desktop and rename it to d2xmusic.mpq drag it to the diablo forum.
paste it again to the desktop this time rename it to d2xvideo.mpq and put it in the d2 folder.
D2loader will now work with a disk.

... Aren't they different files?

Yes but renaming them like that rewrites them and d2 opens like magic.
