What you want to do is right before installing the card, go into device manager and disable the driver for the onboard\intergrated graphics card you got now.

Right click on My Computer > Propterties > Hardware > Device Manager. Find the entry for your current graphics card, right click and disable it.

Now shut down the computer, open up the case and put your new graphics card in. Start the computer again.

The final thing you have to do to completely disable the thing is done in the BIOS. When your computer boots it usually says on the screen press F1\Delete\ESC for setup (it is usually one of those keys).

After doing the stuff in device manager and getting your new graphics card you want to go into the BIOS and find an option called "Disable Onboard VGA". This is usually found in the advanced features. Then save and reboot computer.

Once you get into windows, pop in a CD that came with the gfx card, or have windows update\Google find yourself drivers for your new card. Smooth sailing from there = D

Additional Comment:
You might be able to leave the intergrated card running but there are compatabillity issues and I usually suggest you disable the thing.
