Car Radio Prices? - L4E - 06-17-2007

Hello people

I was just lookin through some papers and stumbled across some car radios, and I realized how freakin pricey they are, like 200$+

I'm by no means an expert in vehicle accessories, so before I say anything stupid, would anyone mind explaining to me how come car radios cost so much compared to normal radios/cd players

(obviously im talkin about radios cd players with line in n shit like that)

Well I used to sell and install mobile electrinics so I know a lil bit. First of all the parts have to be more heat tolerant as there is little or no air circulation inside the dash to dissipate heat. Secondly I know they go to a little greater length on the skip prevention mechanisms. Lastly most brands do just have a hellacious markup on them. Eclipse for example has about a 100% markup at the reatiler. what we bought for $250 we sold for $480-$500. Not all brand markups are so extreme but usually close.

Just put a JVC AVX-800 in my car along with some Focal 6.5" Splits & 6x9"s, 2x 12" subs etc. The DVD Player retail is $1499AUD but i got it for $1092 so that was good Big Grin Only problem with touchscreen dvd players is the damn fingerprints.

That's a damn spiffy head unit there Spit! Good work on the Focal components too, godly! Wish I had the budget for those but I get to settle for MB Quart.

Friend of mine got two MTX 12s in his car and upgraded just about everything else that's got to do with the stereo. Cost him a lot, like almost in the thousands. Its amazing that 600 watts can sound so loud in a small car. (600 b/c its a small car, the speakers can max at like double that)

Yea mine has been about $3000aud. And about 2400wrms. thing that shits me is my headlights dimming with the bass. still sorting that out. So far i've run 70mm2 copper from the chasis to the neg terminal of the battery to help the return circuit. Helped a bit. Might have to invest in a Optima Yellowtop battery and maybe a volt stabeliser. Dont have a capacitor in the system yet but as most say its best to get everything running without one first! Use them as a last resort.

Caps are really not gonna help you that much. A capacitor is only helpful until it is dicharged which with a big system takes only milliseconds. Once it is drained it will actually become a further drain on your charging system. Look at Kinetik for a power cell. It's a much better option then a cap or a yellowtop. My friend who is an professional installer swears by them and I have seen them do wonders for output in competition cars and reliabilty in daily drivers. Check 'em out at kinetikaudio.com.
