I remember seeing on another site something about a hack that would be logged in to your D2 channel of your choice, and you could talk to people there w/o being logged in.

I assume you're talking about a basic Chat Bot? Try StealthBot, it's prob the easiest thing to setup and use at this point.

You are referring to what is called a Channel bot.
You still need to be logged in on at minimum open bnet.
This does require a cdkey obviously.
