Well, they are underground creatures but the spell darkness creates a total pitch black cloud. Soooo unless the creatures have infravision (Like a Drow, Dragon, Mind Flayer, etc... would) they would be blinded while within the cloud.

but they have hightened senses which allows them to see with there senses
