need Smiter advice pls

I'm not asking for advice on how to build a smiter, I know what I want on that subject, it's another problem that i'm facing:

Ichose to start the new ladder off with a smiter, got i through nightmare, with a bit of difficulties though..problem is that my gear is just not good enough to fight on my own, especially not in hell, i have trouble killing creatures in act 1 there.
but good gear is costly..i only have a low spiritsword and a low spirit heraldic shield for the moment.

and i'm not wealthy for the moment, only have a dol and lem..can anybody give me some steps on how i could climb up to get a zakarum, etc. for my smiter?

because it sucks it seems to be some vicious circle: to continue I need good gear, but for good gear i need to be able to fight a bit on my own, ... :)

or any ideas for budget equipment to help me through hell or at least let me do hell-countess runs without to much headaches?

just give any suggestions that could help me out :)
