First off, I think Ssabbath DID invent the genre, because Iommi was the first to use massively oversaturated gain for the time...hell, he even wanted his amps made with buit in distortion, which was something never requested before him. Tony also was the first to deviate from the simple EADGBE tuning, aka standard, dropping to Eb tunings and even Db tunings. I've been hooked on Black Sabbath since i was 5YO, mostly because my dad(RIP) listened to them like crazy. Sabbath has completely influenced my favorite types of music, namely metal, hard rock and some blues. I would have to agree that Sabbath are definitely the best metal band of all time, if not THE best band of all time. I love anything branching from Sabbath, therefore I love Ozzy's solo reign of godlike proportions, and now I'm hooked on BLS, because Sabbath = Ozzy = Zakk Wylde = BLS.

Tony Iommi was the first to really rely on the lower frets and open E strings to riff, and was probably the first to use overly saturated guitar tones.

Who came before them with the styles of heavy metal? I can't think of any. Who came after them in the style of heavy metal?

Really want me to list it? Please, explain how they aren't the forefathers of metal.
Couldn't have said it much better myself... and to dannation, woot for Matt Holt is awesome, I sing just like him IRL...

I guess because I don't like bands who steal all their good music from the they kicked out then when they write their own music it sucks... No offense

Is Rush's Drummer that great? All I've been hearing is that he's one of the best. I'm a fan of Rush btw, not trying to flaming them.

...And Justice For All was arguably Metallica at their strongest. Definitely does not "suck" by any definition of the word. Yes, James borrowed, and flat out stole sometimes, a lot of Dave's riffs and licks, but make no mistake: James was a driving creative force in Metallica. So was Cliff. Dave was great and he was an integral part of the band, but he wasn't everything.

That's a pisspoor reason not to include one of the best selling and most widely influential metal bands ever in a discussion about "Heavy Metal"

Whether you like them or not, I don't see how it's plausable to not include Metallica as one of the best. Influence wise, there aren't many who beat them. Even on a musicianship level they're almost untoutchable. Comercially they probably are the best metal band ever....

    your argument is horribly flawed.

I may have agreed about AJFA but you can't even hear the bass on that album.

I'm not saying it's not metal, it just isnt very heavy nor can you get much from a lot of the lyric writing ...and on my first post I don't know why it says on and on after the priest thing...oh well...I'm a little distracted
