Owl's Guide to Giveaways As many of you have seen, The Recycling bin
(freebies) is a place where members of this forum seem to have the strongest bonds of Friendship and really shows the forums community. The Recycling bin
(freebies) is a very useful place, But if abused or miss done it can lead to annoying spam and bad flaming. Here is a little tip to both Giving and Receiving here.
GIVERS:
1. When finding Items, before thinking about space or gold, have in thought wanting members of a Forum. Understand their needs and before you make that Valk wing Charsi food, Think about a member who made need the items, so take the items you find and put it on a mule
2. When Muleing the item, use a Character who has been permed for 2 or more hours. If none are available, take the New character and park him in game while you watch TV or look at websites....
3. When trying to decide the items that people may want or don’t want, think of any possible use. If you find a few Tal’s helms, chuck a few out and keep 1 or 2. This way members will have the opportunity to use those items, but only if they need it. Pick out items such as the following.
A. MF items: These are very commonly wanted and can start a new players career in your certain realm. Who knows, maybe the person will end up donating some of what they find, making a good chain of giving.
B. Useful Uniques: These can be used by any type of character, LLD or otherwise. When finding an Item like GF, don’t compare it to Botd but think, “How might some one want this” that way, you can find a suitor for the items you donate.
C. Set pieces: Even if your not a fan of sets, remember there are lots of Diablo 2 players who may be interested. They may finally be able to get that 1 piece they have long since wanted.
4. When looking for the items you put on a mule, Right the mules name down on paper and record what items are on what mule. This will make everything go very fast, and finding the items will be a synch.
5. When searching through mules, Take your time. Even though it may seem rushing through it is the fastest, its not. All doing it very quick will do is lead you to a 10 hour Realm Down. If you think that is worth it, then fine..
6. When taking the names of the items you find and Posting them on RPGFORUMS.COM, instead of minimizing D2 and typing the name of every item on mules, Make a list hand written on paper. This way you can save time by typing it out after it was hand written.
7. Now that you got your items on RPG Forums, Watch for the posters to begin! Make your you specified the realm, soft or hardcore, Ladder or Non. This will make everything easier on the Receivers and yourself.
8. When Choosing who to give the items to, watch for how they respond. If they said there loss of items was do to hacking, then you use your own Judgement. Most people will know that 95% of those posting will be Non legit, most of them losing to /dnd scam. It is up to you how to decide. Ask your self these questions before giving out items.*****( See #10 on this section also)
Ask yourself
A. What is there post count? Are they new?
B. Do they have a good Reputation? Are they trust able?
C. How do they ask for items? Are they just starting up or are they to lazy to get an item?
D Do they seem sincere? Or are they just wanting to be PIMPED out.
9. When giving out Items, limit the usual give away to about 3 items. Ask what Items they want and don’t just Reply to, “HOOK ME UP!” The best strategy for giving out items and meeting the people is.
The steps
A. Tell every one who Posted to PM you about the items
B. Have them PM you with there acct name, and add them
C. When you see them on, Message them
D. Don’t just give out your acct name, You will give the wrong person items.
10. When Deciding to give items to a person, remember this. A low post count doesn’t mean they will not be good members. I joined this site a Few months ago, And I remember begging the recycling bin to get me items to get back on my feet. Every one told me I was just a new post leacher, and that really hurt me. Now, a few months later I think of my self as a Semi-Ok member, and am working hard to gain respect. Every one starts from the ground up.
11. (I know 10 looks better but meh) When you decide to give out items, think about this. Why are you giving the items out? If your giving items to Receive Reputation or Popularity, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Giving is only giving if you don’t expect to receive anything in return. NEVER ask “Who ever gets an Item give me +rep!” That is very childish.
GETTERS
1. When you see a post in the Recycling bin, Think about what area you are in. If some one posts Free items in a different area then your own, how will you respond? Do you really need those West items when you play on east? Find your area that you either plan to play in or are playing now then Decide of that.
2. Once you find The right thread, Scan the items on it and write down some possible Items you may want. Then read EVERY post after the first, Checking off what has or has not been taken. If your item has been pre reserved, don’t bother asking for it.
3. Pick out a maximum of a few items. If there is 1 item you REALLY need and is a little more pricey, Just ask for it instead of TONS of items. If what you need has a lower value to most, you can get a little more. Never ask for more then 3, it will make you sound greedy.
4. Tell the Owner of the item both Your acct Name and a meeting time. This will make it easier and then you can get the items you want and need faster.
5. Only ask for the item if you need it!!! Do not take it to keep on some mule, this is greedy and Irresponsible.
6. Try giving back to the community. If you get items for a bot or to MF with, try giving some of your own finds back to the Recycle bin. Few items are unwantable.
7. NEVER EVER EVER say “Can I get that item? + rep for you.” That is very sneaky and mean! Giving rep is Very nice, but ask for the item first, then when recieved tell the Owner + rep.
8. Remeber not to poach some ones Items. If some one asked before you, DON’T go PM the giver and ask for the item in hope he will get to you first. That is very cheap and unruling.
9. If the Owner says No, you drop it. He is the owner after all, and his word is what goes. If you asked first, and he gives to some one else, you live with it. A positive attitude will lead to MUCH more frees then a negative one.
10. Try to build up Post count and reputation. These will catch the owners eye very fast. If you have 1 post and 10 Rep, your chances of getting the Item you want is smaller. But when increasing post count, remember to make the posts thorough so you don’t loose reputation in the process.
11.
Here is a few tricks to making the giver love you more
A. Explain why you need the items. Pity points are not as valued as more of an understanding. Just because you lost a mule does not mean the owner will feel bad. If you are showing your making an effort to get starting again, that is much more valued.
B. Make your asking very thorough. The right person will easily be able to comprehend what you want and are trying to say, so your post wont be ignored.
C. Never tell a story. Show what you are trying to do, but if requesting items don’t tell the owner why you lost your account, tell him/her what you are going to do with it. This will provide a better understanding and trust between the people.
Guests:
1. When seeing some one ask for a very hard item to get, give them encouragement. Don’t tell them they will not get it, that is a form of poaching because any one who would of gave the item may not now. Reply positively, not in any negative form.
2. Lots of members say they have been hacked, but most have either been scammed or made a mistake. When these common threads come up, just explain to the person what had probably happened, and keep your post as little flaming as possible. If some one already informed the guy he probably wasn’t hacked, don’t make another post saying he was.
3. Giving +rep to free givers is very courteous, especially when you aren’t asking for the item your self. Just remeber though, that Giver is checking to see if any one had replied for a want of items to his thread. ONLY reply saying +rep if none have done so since new items have been added, or if you have Constructive Criticism. The person will like to hear that.
4. If some one is giving out Free items,
DO NOT tease the item. He is doing it out of his heart, and laughing at it will only push his self esteem farther into the ground.
5. There also is Poach giving, so make sure your not doing it. If some one is giving an item you have and don’t want, and some one asks for theirs, don’t Reply saying you have a better one to give them. It can be done in PM, but it would hurt the giver to see that.
Ok people, Im no expert at this but this guide will make EVERY ONE who’s giving items away life easier. This is nothing special, just something I made up. I know it doesn’t have much, and Isn’t written the best but I tried. PLEASE add things for me to add/Comments on other Ideas. I know lots of this may go against some of your peoples Self-rules, and thats fine. No,
I am not a Moderator or any one of any importance to this site so these ARE NOT the rules! These are just to help make recycling fast!
