merc question..(specifics on wat lvl should i buy one)

ok my question is i want a act2 nm defensive merc....
i was wondering at what lvl should i get the merc?

im sure people do get it at lvl one(i did buy one when i was getting grushed- i had no patience for it to get to lvl 5)

i bought one at lvl 1 and i was thinking its impossible... i tried to take it to like a norm baal game and i guess it only gets exp from me killing or him killing... but not party kills.

*i was thinking what should be a good lvl to buy him
*how do i lvl him(i no near his own lvl but just sit there and wait for him to kill?)

If you buy him at a low lvl, when he's a higher lvl he'll have better stats than if you bought him at a higher lvl. Merc do get exp for party kills, and Baal or Chaos runs are good for lvling mercs.

you mercs still low lvl right? unless you can make sure they cant get killed(i hate when mine ran up to every monster when he was like lvl5 and died). start doing trist or something. and does your merc get more exp if he gets the kills?

Merc do get exp for party kills.

no. they do not. they only get xp when they or you kill something. i think its half xp when you kill and full when they kill

Well when I do baal runs me and my merc sitback and don't do a thing, but still lvl fine. Edit: Arreat says mercs don't gain exp from party kills, but I still disagree.

Well it doesn't matter to me i buy mine at a high level just put eth fort and eth andy/gaze/dream and infinity /ebotd ghost spear and he can't really be killed anyway

and since 1.11 mercs u buy are always 1-3 lvls under urs, so u dont need to waste time lvling if u buy at a high lvl,
buying at a low lvl and training = usless and a waste of time

you really think you are right and arreat summit is wrong? i know for fact my mercs dont level in baal runs if i dont do the killing. i've had like level 27 mercs in hell baal runs before

I find it best to buy the merc as soon as you start norm baaling. At one point i was buying them at lvl 1-5 but in my opinion it just isnt worth the frustration. Buying them in your first norm baal run works fine for me. But if you want him to be that tad bit better then just try too keep him out out of harms way.

Mercs get 1\2 exp when you get the kill.

It is up to you, to level thim up from low will take a lot of time and patience. And probably over 500k in gold to rebuy, but he will have higher stats in the end. It is really your decision if it is worth your time or not.

Thats what im doing as of now. I've never really compared the stats of a merc you've had since a low lvl, and one you get at a high lvl. Is there really that big of a difference?

I have a merc question. I have gris plate, some helm, and an infinity pike or some shit like that. I was doing runs and when my merc died, I don't see my pike anymore and i'm not getting the stats from it. But when I take off gris plate and put back on it reenchants him with that aura, did i lose my weapon?
