He stood up tall and proud, yet the sorrow still remained
He thought that his emotions died, he was wrong yet again
It wasn’t his path to follow, yet here he is today
War has claimed what was left of humanity, trapping him in his cage

He was a good man, and he had a family back home
But war killed the warmth inside and now he feels alone
What friends he made were just like him, cold and bare
He wished that he could still feel; mourn them when they weren’t there

But no, it can’t happen, war has killed those pains
I guess you would think he’s happy, well think again
Would you rather be a living stone in a world full of life?
Or would you rather take the pain, knowing someday it would be alright?

He stood up, and his eyes were clouded with pain
He thought that he’d felt hurt, he was wrong yet again
It just wasn’t his path to follow, but he’s still here today
War claimed that piece of humanity, trapping him inside this cage

Iron bars that smell of carcass and gun powder
He screams for release, every second he gets louder
Yet the sound of grenades and the cries of pain from soldiers around him
Cut off all his screams, still trapped in that cage from within

He’s the only one in the trench that he was placed in hours ago
He keeps on shooting through the smoke for it’s the only thing he knows
He hears the cries of battle, another soldier dead
Another soldier never going home, will this war never end?

He stood up and his eyes were filled with tears
His heart beat grew faster and he was drowning in his fears
It’s not that he wasn’t strong enough; it just wasn’t his path to take
He was supposed to be a free man, not a bird trapped inside its cage

He stood up and he walked over a wall that he’d never climbed
He’d watch others fall while he was safe inside
And he walked into the middle of the smoke and stood
A man in battle of wills doing the only thing he could

He got out of his cage and let all his burdens go…
