im writing this guide under the assumption that all of you have dynamic ip addresses. if you have static ip addresses, i can't help you there.
first of all, some technical jargon to deal with.
a dynamic ip address is able to change, where as a static ip address is static (unchanging)
the easiest way to change you ip address is to unplug (remove the power cable from) your modem box (not router, that wont change a thing) and wait a couple of minutes. then plug it back in. viola, you should have a new ip address.
why is this?
basically, when you unplug your modem, your ISP (internet service provider) drops your ip address. since you have a dynamic address, your ISP will just give you a new ip address when you power back up.
if for some odd reason you dont get a new ip address, or you dont want to go through the trouble of unplugging it, there is a way to renew your ip address from within your modem.
follow these steps
--open up a webrowser
--type into the address field your router number. ie. http://192.168.3.x
(should be on your router itself or manual. or do this. start, run, cmd, ipconfig, look for the default gateway. http://default gateway number ie 192.168.3.x)
--log into your router.
--find the page where it displays the status of the router.
--what your looking for is the default gateway. (should be a 12 digit number, although im not sure if its the same for everyone. i use windstream dsl)
(you only need to do this if you dont know the address of your modem)
--take that default gateway and put it into the address bar in this form http://default gateway (for example http://192.168.254.xxx)
--you should now be able to log into your modem.
--once your in there, you looking for way to release/renew your ip address. (for me its disconnect, under system summary. dsl uses a PPPoE connection. the disconnect is right next to it)
--once you disconnect, reconnect, and you should get a new ip number.
--done
note, this method might be / will be different for all the systems out there. i attempted to make it as general as possible
if you guys have any questions/comments please post them here.
