my first sig plz help

i have made my first sig but it is incomplete because i dont know how to add an image onto it.

i'm a complete noob at photoshop because i just got it and like i said my first one. appearently i guess its called rendering it on there but im not sure. i have read the render tut and followed it but it didnt work.

i am using photoshop 7.0 because i have windows me

i would like the guy in my current sig by foog to be placed on the partial sig i have made (use link to see the partial sig i have made) http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/9838/1copy9gv.jpg

so if some1 could please help me and explain every basic step i would be greatful

or alternatively u can go file-open then open yr picture use the lasso tool(L) and make a border around the part of the picture u want once thats done press ctrl+x then go back to the window where yr sig is and press ctrl+v and then yr image will become a new layer on yr sig then all u have to do is blend it a little and move it to the position u want

i have another q thou... when i erase y is there a gray checker board pattern it the background that i cant get rid of?

thats what shows as a transparent background it should'nt show when u copy and paste the image

this is a lot harder then i first thought..... i still cant quite fade the edge of the pic to the brush

gahh i fel like such and idiot....but i guess this is how u learn.......

aslo the gradient tool is red...can u change it to say blue?
