They've seen so much in their life they can't go back to normal life, so the boat takes them out to their final destination - Death. At least thats my interpretation.
They're sailing to the Undying Lands because that's where all immortals go. Elves are immortal. In case you're wondering who the elf on there who wasn't anywhere else in the movie, that's Cirdan, the third elf to get a ring. Yeah, I'm a Lord of the Rings nerd... I know pretty much everything about it.

Z0mg LoTRRRR! Well, they go to where the immortals go, the others don't go because they are forbiden there or something.

wait, but i thought elves were immortal anyway so why would they go there?

They go there so they can continue to live in peace or some hippie junk like that. I'm assuming the Undying Lands don't have wars.
The elves are only immortal to time. Sticks and stones still break their bones.

That's right, Sarcasm. Not anymore at least. Back in the day Melkor was the evil dark lord. He was the fallen Valar. Guess who his best lieutenant was? That's right, Sauron. And Ungoliant, who is Shelob's mother. But anyway, way back when in the pre-1st and 1st ages the Valar fought with Melkor and finally sent him to the Doors of Night (The hell of LotR). Any more questions?

does it say all this in the books? also are they anymore books based on lotr besides the hobbit, fellowship of the ring, the two towers and the return of the king? and if there are more valors couldn't this just happen again?
and also, i know how sauron was super powerful with his ring but all the ring does for people is make them live longer(golem+bilbo for example) and make them go invisible so why does everyone else think they'll be super powerful with it?

they going home smart one. they go home to the SEA.

None of them know how to tap into it's power. Sauron created the thing so he knew how to use it.
Also, let's clear up one thing real fast that always bugs me...The Lord of the Rings is ONE book. It is one story and one book it's seperated into three volumes. Tolkien has a few books that take place in Arda, the LotR Earth, these include The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, The Simirillion, and The History of Middle-Earth.

Pfft my idea sounded good if there was no Undying Lands or w/e the **** it is.

Well, you're right as to why Bilbo was leaving Fug, after his adventures in The Hobbit he was never satisfied with staying at home.
