I have just started my first ever Pally build. He is a lvl 76 Avenger on ladder. I have never been to Hell difficulty on the new 1.1 patch. If I take him to Hell now with his equip, (I am by no means rich) will he last? Or will I get trashed bad? I have:
HP:963 Def:3455 Lvl 20 conviction and do 996-1701 Dam. My gear is:
Helm:Rockstopper
Armor:Duriels Shell
Belt:Gloom Trap
Shield:Ancients Pledge
Weap:Demon Limb
Glove:Layin Of Hands

what's your def after holy shield?
I use the "exile" shield
with its aura I can boost my def up to 20k
no monster can kill me in hell except myself ...

"exile" hmm...isnt that the "VexOhm..etc" shield? that gives like lv15 defence aura when equpied?

you can get lvl16 if you are lucky
coz I can't find a HoZ so i use it instead
the mod is not bad

yep, youll get raped in hell.....
ive got the exact same build as u
do baal runs carefully untill 80-85, and untill you can get some better equipment
ive got nords and i do 2.3-2.7k damage with 20 vengence
you will need above 7k defense and all resists above 50 at the least
atm im using gladiators bane cause im poor
get a hireling from hell act2 with defense...throw some good life leech gear on him and youll be a great team in hell....
main thing is getting the skill quests and gaining levels from baal runs untill around 85.
i can solo river of flame. but i cant solo claw viper pit :/

Thanks for the info guys. Sadly that is my def AFTER Holy Shield. I only have two characters on D2 and this is my first time playing online. I have a lvl 76 Javazon that I am going to lvl and have do Hell Pit runs to MF and find better gear. I tried the Merc thing before and he died too much. Granted he did not have very good equip and no life leech. Since the Exile shield gives you Defiance, is that always on and can combine with my right click aura(conviction)? Does anyone know of a place that drops a lot of runes besides Hellforge? Runes seem to be a quick way to get rich.

Council member seem to have the highest chance of dropping Ber rune, and a few others, Hephesto(Helloforge hammer dude) has best thace to drop Zod, and countess always drops runes but so far best I've got is Io rune... -_-;
Also if you dont have the best gear/res just be sure to have LOTS of vita, dont need a whole lot of strength, even dex doesnt have to be too high

def is not a problem if you have exile shield and holy shield
dmg is a problem
i suggest to get a might merc
i think resist 50 all is not enough in hell better boost them to max

Thanks for the info , I will keep MFing and lvling up till I get better gear.
As for a weapon I have heard conflicting stories on the best type of weapon for an Avenger. Some say that only physical damage applies to vengence. Others told me that phys and elemental dam combine just like any other skill. Anyone know for sure? A weapon like Baraners star loses the fire,ice,light dam if thats the case. I was thinking of maybe using Crescent Moon runeword. I do know that mana leech does not work with vengence.

does the damage you see in character sheet (eg: 2.3-2.7k) include all the elemental damages from vengence? ta

I have both answers now after some testing.
First Vengence DOES NOT mana leech. I lowered my mana to 5 mana. Veng takes away 4.5 and I have 5% mana leech. After one swing it showed mana steel(the blue swirl) on my char but my mana dropped to 0.
Second veng does add elemental dmg of a weapon in to the total.
My dam is 943-1644 with demon limb. DL does 93-169 dmg and adds 222-333 fire dam. Veng for me ads 178% fir,ice,light dam. If you add it all together, (max dam is 502 for DL, 178% is 391, add 391 3 times to 502) you get 1678 for max dam. So Veng adds its elem dam ON TOP of phys and elem dam from your weapon. So if someone says you need a high phys dam weap for venge that is not totally true.

Vengance can mana leech depends on weapon, and like fire claws it leechs very little b/c all elemental dmage, leech will only work on the weap damage

it doesn't matter if vengence does not leech mana
if you want to leech mana faster just simply use zeal
i still think for venge
high phy dmg does better jobs since not many monsters are PI

i have 10x more fun w/my zealot than i ever did w/my vengeance pali... phys dmg is just... well more fun lol... not to mention your gonna have a ***** of a time swinging at normal speed against a monster thats immune to 1/3 of your attack... yeah, you start to see what i'm saying? you could just swing at crazy speeds doing 7k dmg and it just makes everything better o.O

I think I am going to try a zealot pally and see how they are. I read your guide to building one and was wondering in what order should I max those skills? So I get the most bang for my buck. Besides BOTD what would be a great "cheap" weapon alternative? Lightsabre or something like that?

well here's the thing... zeal/fana together give u such crazy AR that you really don't need sabre's itd... and since that's the case, i've found it quite handy to throw 2x shael's and 3 %ed jewels into a 5 socketed rune master... i know it sounds cheap but it's quite effective..
as for what skills in order.. start maxing sacrfice till u get zeal.. then take zeal to 5 and back to sacrifice, (one to holy shield when u get there) finish sacrifice and put 1 into fana when u get there, then max zeal, then fana
