Da Vinci Code... What I know and my questions about it.
#1
What I know...

Protestant and Catholic Churches are boycotting the flick and apparently arent to fond of the book either.

What I think from what I've heard...

The Churches are boycotting it because it is about a plot by the Knights Templar to hide the Holy Grail and the fact that there are direct descendants of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

What I want to know....

Am I correct?
Is there more to it than this is I am?
And if I'm not what IS it about?
Maybe more after responses.

EDIT: Also, does it have anything to do with Bible Code?

Well, it also has to do with Da Vinci, hence the book's title. He was said to have been given the scroll of some secrets, he handed it to Mary after he had remember it or something, and he started to incode it into his art. Mary had the scroll last, and perhaps the scroll was the Holy Grail, and she knew the information, so maybe Mary is the Holy Grail. There are a lot of twists and you must read over many times and interpret and think.

I don't want to ruin the story for you in a public forum like this. I could pm you or you could read the book. I really suggest that you just read the book. Get an audio reading if you don't read that much at all.

If you are going to read it, I really suggest the illustrated version. It helps when you are reading about a painting, and you turn the page and there it is. I read it with pure text first, but when I bought a copy of the illustrated, I re-read it and found it a lot better.

well i dont care about giving away a spoiler. and im not about to private message anyone. -----------------DONT READ IF YOU DONT WANT SPOILERS-------------------
Tap Wrote:According to the novel, the secrets of the Holy Grail, as kept by the Priory of Sion, are as follows: * The Holy Grail is not a physical chalice, but a woman, namely Mary Magdalene, who carried the bloodline of Christ. * The Old French expression for the Holy Grail, San gréal, actually is a play on Sang réal, which literally means "royal blood" in Old French. * The Grail relics consist of the documents that testify to the bloodline, as well as the actual bones of Mary Magdalene. * The Grail relics of Mary Magdalene were hidden by the Priory of Sion in a secret crypt, perhaps beneath Rosslyn Chapel. * The Church has suppressed the truth about Mary Magdalene and the Jesus bloodline for 2000 years. This is principally because they fear the power of the sacred feminine, which they have demonized as Satanic. * Mary Magdalene was of royal descent (through the Jewish House of Benjamin) and was the wife of Jesus, of the House of David. That she was a prostitute was slander invented by the Church to obscure their true relationship. At the time of the Crucifixion, she was pregnant. After the Crucifixion, she fled to Gaul, where she was sheltered by the Jews of Marseille. She gave birth to a daughter, named Sarah. The bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene became the Merovingian dynasty of France. * The existence of the bloodline was the secret that was contained in the documents discovered by the Crusaders after they conquered Jerusalem in 1099 (see Kingdom of Jerusalem). The Priory of Sion and the Knights Templar were organized to keep the secret.
This is just what i snatched from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Da_vinci_code Now this is based on what was said in the novel.
You said so much without ever parting your lips.

Honestly, I have never read the Da Vinci Code so i know nothing about it. However, for those of you that liked it there is a book by the same writer that wrote a book that came before the Da Vinci Code. It is with the same main charater. It's called Angels and Demons. It is about the Vatican and the Illuminati. It is also about the creation of the world as well as religion and science "fighting." You know how they just try to disprove the other, anyways... I won't say much more about it as I do not want to spoil it for anyone. I do, however, suggest people that liked the Da Vinci Code to read it.

It is not that straight forward. If you are actually interested in the issue itself, and not the story, read "The holy blood and the holy grail". It's a great book, very informative. Also, at the moment, I am reading "The temple and the lodge". Both are very interesting, because they are more factually, than story orientated.

Isn't the Church also upset because the DaVinci Code states that Jesus took a wife, and hod children, so there would be direct desendants of Jesus out there. That upsets the church I guess.

Kind of, because the entire Catholic church is founded upon the principle that Jesus died for our sins. But if someone managed to prove that he didn't die, and had a wife and children, etc, that ideology would lose it's base.

Exactly, so of course the pope is going to boycott it and call it the devil and what everelse is within his power...he does have quite a bit of power.

She could not have fled immediately after the Crucifixion because she was the first to see Christ after the resurection. But yes I find it a believable story. I just don't know why the Protestant Churches are boycotting it, aren't they supposed to be "nicer" than the Catholic Church. It is not very hard to believe that the Catholics would hide something like this though, their leadership has always been of question. Also back in their day of power it would not have been hard for the Pope to order something like this.

Even if they are nicer, they would obviously find the fact that the belief that their whole lives center on is suspected to be a fraud.

Why would it prove their religion is a fraud? Honestly, I find it fascinating that if it is true that I could go talk to the direct descendant of Jesus. I don't see how it would ruin his image, it should not make him any less or any more of a good man, even if his bloodline still goes on. Thats why I understand the Catholics but still not the Protestants.

The protestants immigrated away from the Catholics because they were oppressive, this would just prove they were right in doing so.

The belif is that he was pure of any sin, for him to take a wife and have children astounds the church because it is the belief that he came only to save us from our sins, nothing else could have been more important to that. That is probably how the church views it.

Well, heres how I see it...

How would it have been a sin if he was married to Mary Magdalene? The Catholic Church really hates pre-marital sex but post-marital sex I'm sure they're just fine with. Sins of the flesh yes, but does this make him a sinner, no. If nothing this makes him more of a human figure because no man can live a life completely sin-free.

Wasn't Mary his mother? If so then yeah I can see why they would be upset. I thought she was the one that had him, the virgin birth.

Mary, the original Mary, IDK her last name was his mother. Mary Magdalene was a completely different person.

Ahhh...don't really know much about her, let me research it a bit.

Additional Comment:
This is weird, some search results show her as a prostitute, and others portray her as a saint. What is the correct way to spell her name?
