is Diablo 2 and it's expansion some of the most cinematic games ever? The entire Tyreal who's really Baal wearing the hood at Marius' jail cell is possibly one of the coolest, and most timely cinematic portions of a game ever. Today's games use cinematic sequences to force the plot out, as if the game were constipated to begin with. Diablo 2's plot CARRIES a game that (Watch the fanboys hate me) really doesn't have a leg to stand on as far as gameplay goes. (Those of you who disagree with my assessment of D2 being a glorified avitar chat, it's only my opinion.) D2's cinematics are matched only by some of the older games like Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, Hitman, and the GTA games.
Is it just me, or...

lol yea, imo diablo 2 has some of the BEST cinematics out of all the games blizzard has made and quite possibly all computer games, but i do have to say, the cinematics make you like "oh yea this is gonna be awesome" and then you actually get into the game and your all like "what happened".
they build you up then tear you back down lol

Compared to most Pc games i have played D2 has the best cinematics

Maybe I missed a few things, but do we ever know why Marius had Baal's soul stone, why no one found/killed/worried about baal until AFTER Diablo was dead, or what "mission" Tyreal gave Marius gave, to which he refers to several times? Why does Marius have visions in the beginning of diablo, anyway? Marius didn't appear anywhere in D1 or Hellfire.. did he?
I don't know, there's just a few plotholes that seem convenient for the LoD expansion.

Well yea for its time Diablo 2 had some awesome cinematics.. but as whole diablo 2 was awesome for its time.

I cannot really comment on the storyline, because albeit I have played the game for 6 years, I never bothered reading the story or watching the cinematics. I just skip them every single time.

Well yea now i ofcourse i skip the movies all the time.. but take a bit of time to watch the cinematics they were quite impresive for there time.

Who is the hell is Marius, if you don't mind?

Marius is the old guy that followed the Dark Wanderer, AKA Diablo's soulstone in the Warrior's forehead. At the beginning of Diablo 2, Marius is visited by a robed figure while in jail whom Marius mistakens for Tyreal, the Arch Angel. Marius is deeply apoligetic for his failure at stopping The Dark Wanderer, as if it were his mission given to him by Tyreal. He then tells the dark robed figure the story of following the Dark Wanderer (As seen in the cutscenes.) At the end of Diablo 2, Marius says that all but 1 of the solestones were shattered. The dark robed figure asks for Baal's soul stone, and "All will be forgiven." Marius gladly offers it up, but suddenly realizes his mistake when the face looking at him from the robes is not that of Tyreal, but of Baal. Baal kills Marius, and leaves the Jail in flames. This was the hint at a Diablo 3. Instead, we got LoD.

D2's Cinamatics are o.k. My favorite is the Tyrael Vs Wanderer scene in Tal Rasha's chamber.
I enjoyed the cinamatics of Warcraft 3 much more, espically when Arthas kills his father. But pound for pound, it seems all blizzard games have very good cutscenes.

The deep history of what went on needs to be explained a little more in my opinion. I'm VERY foggy about what happened in Diablo 1, but the reason the hero of D1 put the stone into himself was because Diablo would release himself from the prison of the stone. After it changed him he went looking for his brothers after killing off Tristram. Baal was imprisoned in Tal Rasha because he was part of the Knight's Templar, in which he and Tyreal were leaders. The Templar was a group formed to oppose the brothers.
None of that is explained in the story, and I know this only because I was bored as hell on a 6 hour car trip with the Diablo II guide when you buy the game as my only source of reading material.

i have to agree with deadly about the warcraft cinematics, they are simply spectacular and trully masterpieces, although its MUCH more recent that d2. the only problem is that the warcraft cinematics were really short and more or less pointless xD
06-17-2006, 08:03 AM
yeah but d2 are amazing and usually out class alot of other games wc3 and ft were nice but to short as stated above and doesnt add much other than a filler i still like illidan vs arthas
06-17-2006, 08:16 AM
I got rid of my copy of War3 and never played FT..
Starcraft's scenes were also pretty good, I don't like the way character's hands&faces look in Starcraft/Diablo cinmatics though. Always a classic however, when they fly the Protoss Carrier into the Zerg hive, or when the Marines crack open some beers they stored in the cold fusion bomb.

only, he wasnt a knight templar, he was some mage group that i cant remember the name of, but cain is part of them too. i'm like 95% sure they werent called knights templar though...horadrim, thats it....tal rasha was the most powerful of the horadrim mages
you are thinking of divinci code with the knights templar
06-17-2006, 08:31 AM
i am clues alltogether
u play a character in d2 and its marius in the cutscenes?? is he your d2 char??
06-17-2006, 08:52 AM
No. I think it's just a sort of a story of an old man that follows the wanderer, and gives you a little bit of insight as to why/what you are doing in-game.
