Smite.... Melee or not melee?
#21
Metalhead Wrote:So is nova a melee skill as well?

I knew you were going to think of a spell and say its close range.

KazeCloud Wrote:Lol. Don't say that. He's gonna think of another skill that is close range and say. SEE THATS NOT MELEE. blank:

Now this is why nova is a spell skill and smite is.

Point #1-There are mainly three kinds of damage you can use on Diablo. One is a physical melee attack, a Spell, or a ranged attack. Smite is definately not a Spell, nor a ranged attack. Nova is Spell.

Point #2-An "Attack" uses a weapon of some type to calculate its damage, while a spell's damage is based entirely on skill level and skill damage modifiers. Smite for example, can use Grief's +damage to calculate the damage.

Point #3-The time it takes to perform attacks is typically decided by increased attack speed modifiers (IAS), while spells' casting speed is typically decided by faster cast rate modifiers (FCR). Smite can.

Point #4-Melee attacks return mana and life. Smite can.

Point #5-Crushing Blow and Open Wounds work at half-effectiveness with ranged attacks. Smite does not work at half-effectiveness.

Point #6-Melee attacks sets of procs. Lifetap on an Exile for instance. Non-Melee cannot.

You are looking at Ar/Def check way too harshly and just because of that one missing melee trait, you think its not melee. When however it is only one small exception.

Here are the things summed up supporting Smite is melee.

Smite is Melee
1. Uses +damage modifier/ Ed.
2. Uses increased attack speed.
3. Life leach. Mana leach. (In pvm)
4. Procs. Ex: Lifetap on exile etc.
5. Crushing Blow and Open Wounds

Smite is not Melee
1. no AR/DEF check
2. Not fair in duels? o_O.

A smiter attacks with his/her shield, which shows no sign of any magic. You don't throw the shield at your opponent, you hold it firmly while you wack your opponent with it. Therefore it is melee.

Actually I thought there are too many cheap counterargument Metal is going to say vs Exorcise's post. Thats why he has no counterargument about my post. Wink

Props to KazeCloud's 6 points argument.

idk what side your on, didn't feel like reading a page of nonsense.
i was just gonna say that if smite isn't melee, then how can lifetap cast when you smite, but i looked at your post and saw it so i just did what i felt was necessary.

Of course I thought it was melee. You bolded and redded one of my points that supported it being melee. I don't believe what I wrote was nonsense though. Every one of my points can be bolded and redded. Thanks btw.

Why smite is a melee. Cause in a melee, nothing leaves or detaches itself from your body. It stays connected while you connect. The spell leaves your body/hand and then it goes to the person and hits them. Same with the bow and arrows. The arrows leave the bow and hit the person. You can say the bow is the weapon and it never leaves your body, but you cant fire it without arrows and if the arrows don't hit, then they dont get damage done to them.

Guided arrows yes is also melee. It fits into most of my points. It sets of procs, Ed works on it, and Ias works on it. Just like smite, it has some exceptions.

Guided arrow is still an arrow, I don't care what the **** it does, it's ranged.

Then go ahead. Of course its ranged. Ranged melee? It is classified with all melee traits except for the fact that its an arrow and just like smite, always hit, which is the exception.

Ok I'm outnumbered... You guys can call it melee but it will never fit in with "true melee". True melee being anything that uses AR and DEF to calculate hits. Think what you want it may be melee but it is not true melee.

Ok, there are three classifications in this game IMO. Melee, ranged, and magic. You either strike it, fire it, or conjure it. It's between the choices of whether being close to your opponent or not, and how you attack your opponent. If you are attacking physically in a stationary position, you are consider as melee. If you are flinging projectiles at your opponent, you are ranged. And last but not least, if you are doing weird hand movements, you are conjuring.

LOL

if you stop and think about it.. why would smite not have AR? is hitting something with your shield sooo accurate that AR doesnt matter?

If you want to put physics into a game yes it would matter. But this is a game, smite would be nerfed if it was blockable.

for arguments sake, smite should be blockable. unless the physics of the shield bash renders it unblockable
