i was browsing along at wikipedia. and i found out that italy royally sucked as an axis power, they sucked so bad that the Germans froze to death near moscow. italy has greater men, greater equipment and air superiority. and they lost to a bunch of brave greeks with WWI equipment, a small nacy, and a really small air fleet.

Mussolini had his Brown Shirts ( I think it was called that) basically the secret police. He copied Hitler who I think had the Black Shirts... Anywho he had his police go around killing people.

Just as most dictators do, they get paranoia.

Stalin did this as well, killed his wife, son, family, all his generals. Stalin basically killed everyone.


It got so bad that people were afraid to stop clapping in his presence. Like during theaters, once Stalin walked in EVERYONE clapped, they had to wait for Stalin to stop clapping or they would disappear the following night. After a while Stalin wouldn't stop clapping so they rang these Bells to give people the okay to stop.

Well not necessarily Stalin... Not much leadership came from him.
In my opinion the Soviet Soldiers where more, well how should I say this, better.
They had the home field advantage, they had more numbers and most of all they were used to the winter.

Hitler was ignorant and thought he would capture Moscow by Christmas. So with his pride he did not send the troops winter clothing. Without the warm clothes the soldiers just froze to death. There were cases of Soldiers losing their fingers when they fired their guns because they were stuck to their weapon. Their famous Panzers were beaten by the winter as well.

All in all I think its the passion and the heart that wins the war. The troops need moral and something to fight for. The Soviets were defending their country, I believe this gave them more spirit and more of a need to fight then the Germans in miserable conditions. Which is why Leningrad never fell.

Hitler had a non-aggresion pact with Stalin which he later broke and attacked Russia. He figured with low morale and shoddy equipment the Russians would fall easily so he refused to resupply his men with winter gear. Winter hit and the Germans got their asses kicked by the Russians, greatly in part to the massive numbers Russia had to throw at them.

Math, you've never been to an American school. HOW DO YOU KNOW? I've never heard of anyone saying, "Man I'd really love to go to that school in Ontario." All the colleges my friends applied to were either in the US or in Europe.

As to the war, you admited in the first post you were reading this shit on Wikipedia...I could do the same thing and throw out all sorts of specifics but I use what I learned and what I remember for my arguements. It's the way I have always done political discussions and such, I discuss what I know.

I feel the big turning points in the war were:

Hitler betraying Stalin. Attacking Russia was probably the biggest mistake Hitler made in the war.

The Japanes bombing Pearl Harbor. Getting America involved leads to Allies having enough troops to spread out onto multiple fronts. Not to mention a naval base much closer to Japan with a fairly large naval presence.

And the bronze medal? Erwin Rommel. Sending Rommel to go toe to toe with Patton in Africa was a HUGE mistake. And why did he do it? Because Rommel questioned a decision? Rommel was one of Hitler's best, if not the best general he had, and he sent him off where he could do the least good. And to top it off? He didn't resupply Rommel when it was needed and Rommel lost to Patton (Who was one of the best the US had but sent off for similar reasons).

Very true, if you count all of the political killings and people taken by the KGB Russia killed a great many people. Not for their religion or anything like that but merel for disagreeing with policy or questioning authority. I believe it was Stalin who once starved thousands of people by cutting off all supplies to them, and they did not have the means to defend themselves from Russia.

Also Math, Russian comrades? Did Canada even fight in WWII? I'm well aware that the Russians lost more people than the US and British combined...but how many Canadians even participated in battle?

uh we did fight in WWII. i think we took control of the juno beach and took antwarp. oh and we helped liberate italy which was under german control, and stalin was the lesser of the two evils.

1.1 million canadians took part in the war. that was out of just 11 million people.
