If you are using Hero Editor V0.82, it will usually tell you what, if any, problems that it sees with your character file. If you are using an older version of Hero Editor, then your problem might be that you are trying to open a character file that is from an older D2 patch. Hero Editor is only able to open character files from the V1.09D and V1.10 patch. So, if you haven't upgraded your D2 to the V1.10 patch, just login to Battle.Net and your D2 will automatically get updated to the V1.10 patch. Then open and exit/save each of your Single Player characters in a D2 game, and they will get converted to V1.10 patch character files. Then you should be able to open and edit them using Hero Editor.
