Ashlyn was dying for a CD player, but she was broke. She couldn’t go to her parents for the money. Her grandmother had recently died and her parents had to pay for the funeral, so money was tight. She needed some cash fast, but she didn’t know how. She thought that maybe she could get a job, so she went to the kitchen, grabbed the newspaper and looked in the ads. “Babysitter wanted! $20 dollars an hour.” Ashlyn’s eyes opened wide when she saw the ad. “I found my dream job,”Ashlyn screamed. “At twenty dollars an hour I can work six hours and have a CD player and some CD’s by the end of the day.” Ashlyn quickly wrote down the address, and rode her bike there.
When she arrived she could not believe her eyes. “WOW! This house is huge! I’m going to baby-sit in style,” she thought. Ashlyn walked up the stairs and knocked on the door. A very handsome man opened the door. “Can I help you,” the man said in a deep voice. “Hi, I’m here about the babysitting job,” Ashlyn said blushing. “Yes, please come in,” he said.
The house was big and beautiful. In walks a very tall woman. “Hi, I’m Mrs. Tanner. This is my husband Mr. Tanner, whom you already met. My husband and I have a big dinner tonight and we need a babysitter badly. We were so worried no one was going to answer our ad.” Ashlyn said, “At twenty dollars an hour, I thought you would have people lined up outside your door.” Mr. and Mrs. Tanner smiled. “Your hired,” said Mrs. Tanner. Ashlyn started to jump up and down. She gave Mr. and Mrs. Tanner a big hug. “Thank you,” she said. Ashlyn thought she was coming into some easy money. She baby-sat her little cousins before and it wasn’t hard. All they did was play all day.
Mrs. Tanner said, “there are some rules you need to follow. The rules are:
“It’s 5:00 p.m. right now. We’re going to leave in a few minutes,” said Mrs. Tanner. Ashlyn said, “I can’t believe this is all happening so fast. Can I call my parents?” “Sure,” Mrs. Tanner said, “while your calling your parents I’ll go get my little precious. He’s seven years old and his name is Ryan. He’s the nicest, sweetest, cutest little boy in the whole world.”
In walks a cute little boy. He has black hair and bright florescent blue eyes. His skin is pale white. “Hi, I’m Ashlyn, nice to meet you.” Ryan said in a little voice, “ I like you Ashlyn, want to play.” “Sure Ryan,” Ashlyn replied. “We are going now,” Mrs. Tanner said. “Please take good care of my baby, he’s very innocent.” “Mr. and Mrs. Tanner, he’s in good hands,” Ashlyn said reassuring them. Mr. and Mrs. Tanner smiled as they walked out the door. Ryan and Ashlyn went into the living room. Ryan said excited, “There’s a good movie on cable starting right now. Its called bloody slasher bloody.” Ashlyn yelled, “No way! You are not watching a movie called bloody slasher bloody.” Ryan screamed, “My mom told you to let me watch whatever I wanted!” Ashlyn said in an angry voice, “I don’t care. I’m sick of parents letting their children watch horrible things. Not on my watch.” “Okay,” said Ryan, “You just broke rule one.” “I don’t care,” Ashlyn yelled.
Ryan said holding his stomach; “I’m hungry.” They went into the kitchen. Ryan grabbed a bowl. He put onions, sardines, ketchup, and vanilla ice cream in the bowl. Ashlyn said in disbelief, “What are you doing? You can’t eat that. You are disgusting, that is so gross!” “My mom said that I could eat whatever I wanted,” screamed Ryan. “I know,” Ashlyn replied, but I’m sure she didn’t mean this disgusting concoction!” “Okay Ashlyn, you broke rule two.” “I don’t care Ryan, I’ll really get in trouble if you get a bad stomach ache, and I’m not going to be responsible.”
“Let’s play,” said Ryan. “I have a good idea. We can play funeral. You just died and I’ll be the mortician.” “Ryan, you are weird, Ashlyn said distressed. “We can’t play funeral. Lets play video games or checkers, but not funeral. You’re starting to scare me. You are very creepy!” Ryan said laughing, “Hey Ashlyn, you just broke rule three.” Ashlyn took Ryan into the living room to watch cartoons. They fell asleep on the couch. When Ashlyn woke up, the room was pitch black. She turned on the light and screamed. Ryan was staring at her with his florescent blue eyes. “You scared me to death,” Ashlyn said holding her heart. Ryan said, “your broke rule four. I was supposed to take a bath at eight o’clock and it’s now nine o’clock.” “Oh Ryan,” Ashlyn said annoyed, lets skip your bath and we’ll tell your mom you had a bath.” “Poor Ashlyn,” Ryan said in a sympathetic voice. “You also broke rule five. I fell asleep and you didn’t read me a story.” “Ashlyn said, “It’s not too late for rule five. I’ll take you upstairs, put you to bed, and read you a bedtime story, but first let me go to the bathroom.
When Ashlyn came out, Ryan was asleep on the couch. “Oh well,” said Ashlyn, “I guess I did break rule five, and since I’ve been breaking all these rules, I might as well break rule six. I wonder why Mrs. Tanner didn’t want me to touch him.” Ashlyn sat on the couch next to Ryan. She extended her arm to touch him. “Don’t touch him!” said a man’s voice. When Ashlyn looked around, she didn’t see anyone. Ashlyn thought it was her imagination. She slowly reached out and touched Ryan, but her hand went right through him. Ashlyn started screaming. Her heart was pounding so fast. She ran to the front door. When she opened the door, standing in front of her was Mr. and Mrs. Tanner. She had a hard time recognizing them. They looked different. They both had pale green skin and fowl breath.
Mrs. Tanner said in a wicked voice, “Why did you break the rules?” Ashlyn was speechless. Mr. and Mrs. Tanner grabbed Ashlyn by her arms and dragged her into the living room. Ryan was sitting on the couch with a big grin on his face. Ryan said in an evil voice, “She broke the rules, now she has to pay.” Mr. and Mrs. Tanner nodded yes.
“You’re not the one we are waiting for,” said Mrs. Tanner. Ashlyn got the courage to speak up. She said trembling, “My hand went right through Ryan.” Mrs. Tanner said mimicking Ashlyn, “My hand went right through Ryan, well of course it did, we’ve been dead for years. Our precious Ryan needed a sister or brother. We thought you might be the one, but you’re just like the others. You broke the rules.” Ashlyn said, “I heard a voice warning me, I thought it was my imagination, but now I don’t think it was. Who was it?” “Guilty your honor,” Mr. Tanner said joking. “It was me. I tried to give you a chance, because I liked you. I wanted you to be my new daughter, but you broke the rules. We have been searching for a person to follow the rules, but everybody who answers our ad, breaks the rules, now your sentence is DEATH!”
Ashlyn started screaming. The room went pitch black. Ashlyn could hear her heart pounding faster and faster. She was paralyzed with fear. Ashlyn kept saying to herself, “This is a dream, just a dream, I’ll wake up soon, and this will all be over.” “It will be all over,” said a voice in the air. Ashlyn was never found. Joey needed some quick cash. He saw an ad in the newspaper. “Babysitter wanted! $20 dollars an hour.” Joey thought he was coming into some easy money . . .
