I'd say Paladins are the most versatile chars because they pretty much have a build for everything. Hammerdin/Zealer for PvM, Charger/Smiter/FOHer for PvP and with the Dream and Dragon runewords, they can get insane elemental damage on their zeal. IMO, they definitely are the best overall.
No other char can go through hell easily? I don't think so... Dual-element sorcs solve this problem, even if they are weaker than their single-element counterparts.
Necros have plenty of skills to hold enemies in place (skeletons, bone wall/prison) and they have many curses to create a large group of enemies to destroy with ease using corpse explosion.
Cold ele druids are great too because they have a mixture of cold and physical, meaning that enemies who are totally immune to their attacks are rare.
Trappers have a combination of light (Lightning Sentry) and fire (Fire Blast i think) to kill most immunes too.
With decent equipment, Bowazons can destroy anything in Norm/Nightmare/Hell but without decent equipment, they have a small chance unless used properly (Decoy+Valk to lure enemies and dispatch them from a distance).
IMO, barbs have a tough time going through hell (for me anyway because they are my worst char) and for me to solo hell with them, I need BOTD, Enigma, 10 WC skillers etc. Might just be because I have no skill with barbs at all.
Can't be arsed going through a long explanation for PvP but sorcs can destroy Foh/Hammer/Charge/Smite paladins from a distance as long as they don't leave an opening for the Paladin. Necros can do the same as long as they don't get within a Paladin's range, as well as amazons and trappers. Druids can easily be killed by Paladins though because you need to get close to them to hit with Hurricane/Tornado or with bear/wolf skills and most Paladin builds destroy barbs.
