I'm pretty sure the consensus here is that teachers are underpaid for the work they do, essentially holding down 3 jobs in the form of one... Teaching, Part-time parenting, and Disciplinarian.
The problem isn't that teachers need a new way to get paid, or that they are under-paid because of an unwillingness of the schools to pay them more... Its all of the people around you, your family, neighbors, grandparents, and friends.
Every year the school proposes a budget to get the money that it will need and aside from the arbitrary pittance the state already gives them, the additional amount necessary goes to a comittee or town board meeting and is voted on to be made up in the form of taxes.
Who are the majority of people who vote? Without any information of my own, I'd have to say seniors... the grandparents of the nation, who assume since their children's children don't go to school in that area, why should they pay? Or even worse, if they have no children, why pay anything at all?? There are republicans in my area who put up signs pandering to the seniors saying no school taxes at all, vote for me etc....
So, in essence, the people whos generation was fighting in world war two for the honor of our country, now want to see it ground into the ashes just to save a buck and be able to go to florida this year.
Unfortunately, public schools have become a disaster, but how can it be fixed?? Home schooling only is beneficial for children who's parents are at least moderately intelligent, and privatized schooling is just way out of budget for most families. Until the American public decides that education is the important thing it really is, teachers are doomed to make 35k a year, and football players will make 35 million
