Wow, this thread is still here...I might as well say a few things then.
Alma is a poor choice for smiters. It beats HoZ by up to a measly 25%ED, but lacks resists, not to mention HoZ also adds 2 to HS, which is 8 base smite damage.
Griswold's shield is very customizable, but it lacks +skills, and has very inconsistent smite damage. I would only use it if I need to stack a lot of resists.
Phoenix shield adds a tremendous amount of damage, but lacks defense and blocking. In a way that makes it the perfect smite vs. smite shield, but it's a glass-cannon shield in every other situation. I use this to specifically deal with Exile users, since by ending the duel quickly with more damage, there's a lower chance of Life Tap triggering...not that it would matter since I'm pulling off 10k+ damage.
Exile seems to be a favorite on these forums. I'll be honest with you. Only 1 out of 20 Exile smiters had a remote chance of beating me. Are the other 19 all poorly built? Most of them had better charms than I did (pCombats with life), and maxed the right skills, whereas I only have 16 points in smite and 10 points in holy shield. Why am I winning with my upped HoZ setup? Is it because they all got unlucky due to vortex shield's pathetic minimum damage? Is it because their 19.25% (Exile + Drac's) chance to cast Life Tap didn't happen? Or was it because of "lag"?
In most duels, I noticed that in order for the Exile opponent to have a slight chance at beating me, his Life Tap must trigger in any one of the first 3 hits. First 2 hits if they were relatively poorly built characters.
The chance of LT being cast in one of the first 3 hits is 47.34645781%.
The chance of LT being cast in one of the first 2 hits is 34.794375%.
I won't give any names, but one Exile smiter in particular, who's in a very well known clan, was killed by me in one hit. Having the word "smite" in his name, I expected him to at least be able to take 3 or 4 hits from my supposedly weaker smite. Perhaps Exile builds also tend to have lower life?
My conclusion: Exile is more suitable for PvM (and maybe against some barbs in PvP), where LT is almost guarenteed to trigger.
