Have you even been to Ironforge? the bandwidth is far from irresistible. the money is to pay programmers to constantly "trickle" update the game to keep everyone honest. In addition to anti-hack, the money is spent to pay programmers to create new quests, quickly fix bugs, and increase the story lines/ plot / items.
I seriously doubt all the money they make from monthly payments are going just programmers. Can you imagine how much bandwith it takes to run an MMORPG like FFXI or WoW?
