the practice of actively seeking to increase the number of racial minorities in a work place or school. Such measures may include extra efforts to recruit more applicants, or may include actual quotas for hiring. Supporters say these policies are needed to overcome the patterns of employment and education created when minorities were excluded from many jobs and schools. Critics say some affirmative action policies are unfair, and amount to “reverse discrimination” against whites.

Affirmative action (US English), or positive discrimination (British English), is a policy or a program providing advantages for people of a minority group who are seen to have traditionally been discriminated against, with the aim of creating a more egalitarian society. This consists of preferential access to education, employment, health care, or social welfare.

[SIZE=2]I think that all people should have equal rights and oppertunity. I am one of the most anti-racist people you have ever seen, but I do not think a person should be hired because they are a memeber of a minority, when there are more quallified people for the position.

Harder crimes on racisim, a more equal society and state of mind of all people. People don't stand up to people that are racist - and that is just wrong.

That is what people should aim for - Not trying to hire more minorites because they are afraid of being accused of being racist, but trying to do the best to stop the hate and treat all people with equality.

well said. that sums up my position quite well. i do not believe that america can learn a lesson on racism and discrimination when it actively does it against a the former socially ruling group. people bring up how blacks were slaves in the past or how the chinese were exploited but the fact is that no matter how well meaning they are, they are still stuck in the mindset of grouping people into race. they feel guilty for treating our ancestors the way they did in the past but they are making the same mistake by inheriting the guilt of their race even though somebody that is not them did those actions. the reason that minorities dont complain about it is because we want to take advantage of this. however, it is not right. if blacks had felt guilt and thus agreed to be slaves, we would still have slavery. people cant hold themselves accountable for what somebody in the past with the same skin color did
i'm getting off track. anyways, i think that the worst thing we can do while recovering from an anti-minority attitude is to convert to an anti-white attitude out of guilt. it's just as wrong and it punishes innocent caucasians who have worked just as hard and are just as qualified as any minority. look at the person, not the pigment
