I cant speak for SB becuase I never played it, but the storylines are all diced up in both the sequels. You play the Tale of Souls mode on SC3 which you can choose your character's path, but for the most part it's some stenciled 'go left or go right' decision with stories that are copied between some characters, its just has a plastic rushed feeling and reading through the roughly translated dialogue is sometimes a chore. That and some of the character's ending sequences (all of them have two different ones) seem poorly done.
I can see how that influnces people's opinion on the game, but really I don't play for the storylines (though if the fleshed it out completely and made it compelling for each characters...) I just play for pure gameplay mechanic, and I think SC3 is superior to SC2 in that regard.
