If they are randomly generated, it would be difficult to keep them from sucking and the frustrating thing would be if you have to wear some other item (i.e. shitty personalized armor instead of Enigma, so that you'd get the bonuses for your nice gloves).
I think that it would be better if each class had their own personalization bonuses. Potentially, I think that it would be interesting if you included armor as well, so that people won't be able to Teleport any more, but in exchange you allow other mods to spawn on those items, that usually woudln't be able to, i.e. magical gloves for Windy with +3 elemental. It would make the game much easier for poor newbs.
Obviously ditto for PvPers.
Well, the randomization process wouldn't be "completely" random, but I don't think it would be as interesting to have it fixed to say, just one specific bonus for the class making it. I was thinking a sightly random way would also add some play balance in the sense that it would add some variable that you couldn't control in maxing out your character's equipment. i.e. You couldn't necessarily have the best "perfect" highest rolled of every unique; and the best possibile set bonus to those uniques together. Since if they weren't a set, you could just try again or trade for a "perf" one, but since they are several separate connected pieces, tied to you, and limited by your quests, it would make it so you couldn't overhaul your equipment to be absolutely perfect, like so many PvP builds do.
About the monster drop idea, pawoodchuck, this might work if it were agreed upon like "loot your/my corpse" in hardcore mode. Because such a thing could conceivable be agreed upon in terms of game realism between characters and it would help by making you both know what creatures dropped which item and which was legitimately whose. But I think as it is, it is realistic, and a nice equalizer when a less powerful character is teamed with a more powerful one going around killing all the enemies or rushing them, many like a boost when they're starting a new character with items a bit out of their own likely drop range.
