With two expos like he had, I would guess 6 or 7 Gateways would easily be kept up with relatively full queues. Plus development. Ideally, you would want to keep less than 2-300 resources at any time. That high yield resource area would up that number substantially, but he should've teched further and gotten some air units.

Imo, he put all his eggs in one basket and failed to tech harder until the very end. A couple shuttles (if they're even still around with the teleporting capabilities of pylons) would have destroyed that secluded expo.
