It's not "bad."
When you have magic find it gives increase chances to find magic, rare, set, and unique items.
However, it raises magic by the highest amount, then rare, then set, and then uniques.
So when it says +40% to magic find, it's like 40% magic, 25% rare, 10% set, and 2.5% unique.
Of course, not all those percentages are right, but yoiu get the idea.
