This one goes out to all my homies in Brouge: the best mf is the best mf you can build while still killing fast. I have a sorc who can use 900+ mf to slay mephy, while my barb uses about 600 mf. The best mf, to be sure, is any mf 300-400+ that kills fast. Don't slow yourself down building the "ultimate" mf char. About 400-600 is great for a sorc, and a bit less for a barb (who switches to ist'd ali babas or mf jewel'd ali's). Hire a merc when a boss is hurting, to save gold on merc, and to boost your mf (if the merc does the killing, you get merc mf+your mf). Mf does not effect rune drops. Unlike what I think someone was saying above, it DOES improve your chances of finding unique items. How? It rolls for: ilvl (item level), tc (treasure class), and QUALITY (that is, what distinguishes elite items from exceptional items). With all of that boosted, you will find many more uniques with mf than without mf. Another thing: mf a lot (wf doesn't drop too often), and mf in the right places (pits/mephy/baal...and pindle if you like spending whole days wondering if he drops good items). It is better, of course, to mf in hell, since hell monsetrs drop better items (higher ilvl, tc, and quality). And don't forget that as mf increases, returns diminish: in English, this means that the higher your mf (especially after like 400-ish) gets, the less your mf gets proportionally (and the math on this shows that the diminishment is pretty strong).
