Very interesting article on Lateralus, the album and song

That shit is just crazy. It really gives me, an avid Tool fan obviously, great, new respect for them as musicians. They have got to be THE most talented band I have ever listened to. I don't care if you don't like the music, they ****ing own any band you'll ever say is better.

Wow. I read that thing and it really just wanted me to go download Lateralus to see what they were talking about. I want to buy the CD now, but that probably won't happen any time soon, I tend to forget these things. =\

I can pick up any 4 year old off the street and they would have more creativity than anyone. Children dominate the Creativity Competition. Wheres my 5$ *****.

This guy was "TRYING" to explain, it used more forethought then needed, he was trying to teach a leyman basic math and he came across windy because of it. I mean show that to a 10 year old and they would still get the basic idea.

I hope no one was actually impressed so much as made to think, this type of thing should come to you're head like a normal thought not like a "whoa, that blew my mind thing".

Proper musicians alway's do something to set thier music apart Tool just actually did it. I won't say this is godly in any way though, go read some book's on wormholes and the like then tell me if this really impressed you all that much.

Tool, you're a bandwagoner. Maynard is a great guy and musician, and so is the rest of the band, but they aren't Jesus. No matter what Maynard thinks, he WON'T ever be god. They're a great band, but frankly, they bore me.

I seen them live twice. Yes, I am a concert whore. I see every show I can (thankfully, Tool was free). The members were so perfect it was shitty. When I seen Zakk Wylde, Shadows Fall, or Damageplan, they'd be all over the stage and miss notes from time to time. They'd jump around, crack beers open between riffs, invite the crowd up on stage, hell.. Jon (Shadows Fall) even played riffs IN THE MOTHER****ING CROWD. Tool?

None of the band members ever moved. Maynard never moved his feet. They all sat there and played note for note every song. I'd have more fun drinking beer in a car listening to the CD than watch them play live. Sad but true. I was so bored with Tool I went outside the venue (I was not the only one, lol) and drank with rednecks. They were also bored because "it's so godd-mn loud and they are so boring all I have to do is drink."

Tool's over-rated. They're modern-day studio genius, but live is where it's at. If you can't entertain me on the big stage, you ain't shit. I'm not the only one who feels this way. Slayer's another band like that. Studio-wise, they bust your balls. Live, after 20 minutes you're fiending for alcohol and wishing you woulda spent your money at a pool hall hitting on bartenders.

When you use math to justify how great music is, you're a nerd. WHen you buy into it, you're a sheep. If it's good, it's good. No way around it.

Tool bores me and almost everyone I know. It's great music to listen to while you're drunk, but it sucks while you're drinking. It's a boring listen live. I may be a minority, but I follow my tastes. If you want unique musicians, check out the Dead or Pink Floyd. I was BLESSED to see the Dead with Warren Haynes and my god, that's a show. Studio, the Grateful Dead may NEVER float your boat, but live, even totally sober, you're blown away.

... Bandwagoner? So... Basing this on...? You think I like Tool because I read some article about how they piece together their music in a way more unique than any band? Bull shit. Don't make me lose any and all respect for you man. You're a good guy but when you say I'm a "bandwagoner" because I posted an interesting article about a band that kicks extreme *** you're just being ignorant.

Who gives a shit if they bore you? Not I. I find them better than any thing I can think of. I've never seen them live myself, my brother has though. I'm not going to repeat anything he said because I don't remember it, but I have seen bootlegs and shit of them live. I thought it was kickass. But you know what? That's because I'm not you. Or anyone else who thinks it's boring.

And who said I was using math to justify how good the music was? I was using it to show you how amazingly creative they are. They are gods among mortals. Don't try to tell me otherwise. You see people calling Alah and Jesus and shit gods all the time when they were just normal people who did amazing things. And just so you know, I am a nerd. Wink

And in many ways, Pink Floyd and Tool are the same. They both use a shit load of symbolism, both in song and art. (I got a lesson on Pink Floyd symbolism last night.)

Also, my brother's friend told me that he heard on the radio Pink Floyd got back together or something. I don't know for sure, but that's what he said. So yea! =D (And I like the Dead too. Wink)

Well, I disagree when you say that they're gods amongst mortals. Idiotic statement, really. I think it's incredible that they used the Fibonacci sequence in their music (I read that article, I'm a drummer, I understand the math and I understand the drumming) and I'm amazed that they pulled it off. I think this is just really mechanical song writing-something a computer would write. This isn't a slam on Tool (or Brandon keke) but I thought song-writing was more emotional, and less calculating.

Less emotional? Parabola anyone? He had a very nice interperation (SP?) of what Parabola was supposed to mean. And anyone who really listens to The Grudge and understands what Saturn returns is would understand they're far more emotional than someone would think them out to be. Aenima? Opiate? (The songs) All forms of emotion, mainly anger, though. =\

Tool, mypoint waswn't to bash your heros smart one. It's to provoke thinking:

No matter how "amazing" you are, if you suck live, you need to deliver more. When half the arena wants to drink beer outside over watching you perform, something's wrong.

I like some Tool now and then, but they aren't amazing.

I made that post to push your buttons. Don't ask me why italics are on, I don't know, but i'm not going to turn them off. I dislike Tool because they suck live. They don't "suck" in the actual meaning of the word, they are boring. They never move, they don't try and have a stageshow, they just perform. Yeah, music is what we're there for, but I don't wanna pay 70$ to hear a cd played out in front of me. It's cool to see people get massacred and 10 foot flames set people on fire. No harm was intended, just stating how I FEEL. The article was interesting, it's great.

The math statement simply meant that if you need Math to reinforce how awesome a band is, you're either playing with too much time on your hands or you just need hobbies. If it's good, it's good. I have mad respect for Tool. Where Pink Floyd and Tool differ is the live shows; I said Tool were studio geniuses and I meant it. Live they are inferior. Pink Floyd delivers and then some. I've never heard anyone downtalk Floyd's stageshow/stage presence, but in almost EVERY tool show I've seen reviewed, Stage show and presence lacked beyond belief. THAT'S what I'm saying.

I knew if I took jabs at Tool you'd try your best to fight back. It's entertaining to me. You all should know I post to push buttons and pi-s people off in a harmless way. It's entertaining for everyone to read and fun for me to type. Opiate is an awesome collection, too. If Tool would put 150% effort live just like they do in the Studio, they'd be my favorite band probably. Nothing, I mean NOTHING, like a poor live show turns me off to music. That's why I LOVE Shadows Fall, Pantera, Zakk Wylde, Mule, etc. The shows are awesome, and they're real enough to miss notes and still go on. I mean, I can't stand Gwar's studio shit, but when I seen them about a year ago, WOW. The stage show was INSANE. The music took backseat. I LOVE Gwar now and can't wait to see them again when the money's right.

Do you feel me now?

No, seriously though, what makes you think I'm a "bandwagoner"?

And you should know that not everyone thinks that Tool is boring live. If you think they're boring watch Danny Carey. That guy is by far the best drummer currently in a band. Better than Slipknot's Joey.

By the way, you ever listen to Susperia? They own... <-- not something to get off topic about, question directed to DBD the next time he replies if he does.

..some people I just can't have fun with.

No, I have not heard that band, but i've heard wicked reviews of them. Take my posts with a grain of salt, especially criticism, because they're worth less than that. I'm not above anyone, I just state what I feel. I have the deepest respect imaginable for Tool as far as songwriting and musicianship goes, but live just ruins it for me
