If you look on the Arreat Summit now ,they have updated the armor section, and tell you how many sockets each item, whether its normal, exceptional or elite, will get.

Generally...
Normal item = 2 sockets
Exceptional item = 3 sockets
Elite item = 4 sockets
Check it out and see.
