Differences of D2Classic and Expan.

I know there's alot of differences between D2Classic and the LoD exp., but isn't there a way to give your merc potions, and equipment on the classic D2? Or is it just on the expansion? And this probably sounds like a stupid question, but just to be sure - Runes are only in expansion games, right? And what is your opinion on going to expansion from Classic? I only have the Classic D2 at home, but I am thinking of getting the expansion. Help me out and let me know what you think.

Well I've heard some say that Classic is better, but I'll probably switch to the exp. anyway. What about the items for mercs? Is that in Classic? Or runes?
