Memories!
#1
ok here's the deal. i've got me a new 256mb Geforce 5500 OC graphics card (which kicks major ass!) now i'm lookin into upgradein my Ram situation. only thing is i don't know how much ram my board will accept and i don't have the computer here with me to look it up. Its a VIA motherboard and a 1.6ghz Duron processor. i have 512mb DDR in it right now but i'm lookin at gettin 2 of the 1gb sticks that Best Buy has on sale. anyone know how much VIA motherboards usually hold? or being DDR does it matter? having 2 gb of ram would kick so much ass on my computer i could play anything i wanted but i don't wanna buy them things and stick em in and find out my computer won't recognize it all.

give me some ideas i'll see if i can remember what motherboard i have exactly.

no no i've only got 2 slots i'm just wondering how big of a stick i can go before my computer won't read it. like some systems won't let you upgrade past a certain point. i'm gonna take my two 256 sticks out but i wanna know if i can replace them with 2 1gb sticks and still have the computer read them.

I really doubt it will take a gig stick. I'd say it will take 512MB at the most. But it will depend on how old the motherboard is. If you could get on the comptuer and find out (use everest then we could find out for sure, and we'd also know what type of RAM you should be buying, But as for cost, I'd bet newegg will always be cheaper than any bestbuy sale (at least if you don't count rebates).

You should really try for a new board and CPU also. Isn't the Duron kind of like the celeron? You can get board/cpu combos cheap from outpost.com
They might be having some sort of holiday sale.

A 5200 isn't too hot either. I wouldn't spend the money for 2 gigs of RAM on that system. A gig maybe, but 2 would just be overkill, even on a good system (except when you play BF2).

there still is not many cases where you will ned 2 gb ram, 1 gb will take care of you for sure, plus, even if u wanted to play bf2, the game dont support the 5500 nvidia card which really sucks because thats what i have... go with 1 gb (2x512)

Heh, I didn't even think about BF2 not being compadable (not that you would even want to try to play it anyways). So 2x512 sticks looks like the best bet for you, assuming your motherboard can take that much memory. Find out what board you have so we know, and like I said also so you buy the right type of RAM.

i think i'm just gonna do the new board/processor thing from outpost. i can probly talk my brother into buyin the board and cpu i have right now with my old 64mb vid card for the price of my new board. (he's desperate for a computer my parents have a 1.2ghz HP with stock graphics and its slow as hell) i'll give that a try this afternoon Big Grin
