The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
#1
Ok, who has it? Who loves it?

I picked it up yesterday and though I've only gotten in about two hours of play I'm definately loving the new look and pretty much everything about the game.

To anyone that tries the arena...when you get to the twins make sure you've leveled up a bit and have some decent armor cause the one with the bow will just keep shaving off your hp while the one with sword keeps pushing you back.

[Edit] Also, anyone figure out the console commands yet? None have been posted anywhere that I've seen, other than god mode, full help, unlock, kill, and teleport. I tried experimenting with some of Morrwind's and instead of the "player->" at the begining you start with the command. So I tried "additem "gold001" 10" in an attempt to get it to work but it says something about missing the ObjectID. Any ideas?

I haven't played it yet but heard mixed reviews. It seems amazingly large worlds and many things to do but its a small story line, (My 1 friend beat the game at lvl 8). I guess i have to try for myself.

This may sound like a poke at the obvious but..
Did you check the directories to see if item id's exist? If not did oblivion ship with a level editor like marrowind where you could go in and look up item ID's?

The editor was released on the internet the day before the game was released so people could get a jump start on editing. And actually I found out they have a wiki with lots of commands and I figured it out. Instead of adding the player-> I just went to third person and clicked on myself while in the console X_X Easy solution but I figured it out like 30 minutes after posting that question.

[Edit] Also, you have to use the hex ID so instead of gold001 it's 0000000F

You never make seperate characters? One for cheating and slaughtering innocent townfolk and the other to play through the story?

Morrowind > Oblivion in my opinion.

I just ****ing hate the xboxy feeling that Oblivion has. That is one think that so put me off the game. I prefer the gameplay in Oblivion, but the menus, journal, etc were SO much better in Morrowind. I really hate xbox now :\

I think gameplay is more important...by far.

Now there is one thing in the gameplay that they completely ****ed up, namely the fact that monsters adapt to your character's level. Essentially, you just walk through the game. Morrowind was really hard in the beginning, then you worked hard to make yourself godly, and then it became really easy. In Oblivion, it's the same shit all the time, you can finish the game with a lvl 1 character.

I got this quote from oblivion forums and i think this is the best sum um for teh game i have read/heard yet:

"I can't say I blame the reviewers for bestowing praise on Oblivion. Play it for 4 hours and it is an excellent game. Play it for 4 days and it is an awesome adventure. But at some point it starts to grind you down.

Suspence, atmosphere, variation, sense of achievment, mystery are all missing. Character development and longevity are stunted and the much vaunted freedom lasts until you max your first stat at which point you realise the game was designed to be completed by level 15-20.

This does not make it a bad game. Far from it. It is a fantastic romp and in todays climate is exceptionally good value for money. But a lot of people here, myself included, expected the freedom and open ended play of its predecessors and a shelf life of more than three weeks.

I like the story lines, I've heard far worse voice acting and while the AI would never pass the Turing test (1) it does give a kind of quirky life to the place. I truely hate the interface, more so every day, the omnipresent leveling of both characters and rewards and knowing the chalange of the next dungeon will exactly like the last. Then there are the technical flaws in the application of attributes and stat boosts that make a nonsense of enchantments and potions.

The inconsistecies and one size fits all interface give the impression the game was rushed or that no one cared. The focus on adventure, decimation of role playing and in-built character obsolescence give the impression the game design was driven by accountants and marketing. The 'wam bam thank you mam' nature of the game shows a shift in target audiance, I hope someone remembers how little loyalty this new audiance displays.

So, no, I can't say I blame the reviewers for bestowing praise on Oblivion, this was one of the main design goals. And I'm not surprised you've noticed the torches and pitchforks being readied, they'll be in the hands of the once faithful who at no point featured in any of the final design decisions.

Oblivion. A good game, but not the one I wanted to buy. And while I'm sure it will sell well I feel Beth. will one day kick themselves for missing the opportunity of releasing another clasic."

Edit: omg dyna plz remove those pics they are messing up the thread.
