Just reformatted, need help plz
#1
i just reformatted my computer. i had seen clear instructions how to do it but i paid a place to do it because i didn't have the driver installation cd so i needed them to get it somehow. i heard the guy say (ghetto computer nerd, was i was laughing on the inside when i was talking to him) that they downloaded it from the microsoft website. he also said that i could maybe get it if i just downloaded a newer version of windows off the microsoft website. What i'm asking is: can i download drivers in a newer version of windows, and if not can i get them on the microsoft website? and without drivers can i still go online?

also, are they're any basic programs i need that windows doesn't come with(acrobat reader etc). and how do i know if i have the latest version of windows and if so i go to the microsoft website to get it right?

i specificly asked them to turn the windows firewall on but if i get another one it won't hurt right? i'm going to get nortan antivirus(teacher's cd).

thx for helping lol and i'll probably be able to know how to reformat for sure next time. i just didn't the first time because i wasn't 100% sure and i had extra money(thx god for work lol)

Er, so, You have a reformatted computer with nothing on it right now?
Or have you just reinstalled windows and have a fresh computer with nothing else on it? Truthfully the microsoft website has a rather comprehensive library of drivers, and actually scans your computer and finds the correct ones for you.

As far as the drivers to connect to the internet I'm not sure, I know windows software (the newer versions) will run devices with 'default' drivers, inefficent built-in temporary deals to get hardware to function so you can get drivers later...

yeah i have nothing on it right now. just like when you buy it. i'm searching their site right now, i can't get windows defender because i need windows xp service pack 2 and last time i downloaded that it messed up. when i learn where i can get drivers i will since i can always reformat and try again.

I don't suggest Norton (click AVG in my signature for a good free antivirus), and I suggest turning off the Windows Firewall and going with one such as ZoneAlarm.

As for the drivers and stuff, I really don't know what you are trying to ask. Are you having difficulties installing drivers for hardware?

If you are talking about hardware drivers, you can get 99% of them from the manufacturers website, or from Windows Update\the Microsoft site.

windows will be able to run the older drivers. if thats what your asking. all windows will do is put out a warning asking if you want to do that

I always suggest reformatting yourself... you should not need any help unless you are trying to partition the hard drive or something

I suggest most people do split the drive, have one drive such as C:\ with just the operating system and essential programs, and then another drive, such as D:\, for games and other things. It makes it easier to make a ghost image of your C:\ drive and at least if you are hit by a virus or anything and you need to reformat C:\, you are not loosing any pics, documents, videos or games off of D:\.

I was only using an example. C:\ has become the common letter for the main hard drive, but you could make it any letter you felt like. The whole idea is having one drive with just windows, and the other with documents, games, music, video... and then if something happened to your computer in the form of a virus, you can just ditch windows and reinstall without loosing anything.

It was just a suggestion, I can't decide if your reply was spam or just dumb...

if using windows, the updates are auto. as for drivers, you only need to download if its different from the main system i.e. logitech mouse or whatever. for other things. divx, xvid, quicktime for basic codecs. it should cover most audio and video. if your being cheap for protection, get avg or an etrust security package. comes with antivirus, wall, spam and such to block.
