well a few days ago my comp somehow broke down so it wouldnt load of my drive or something. so i brought it to my uncle who then fixed it with ease that night. the next day i brought my monitor to play at my cousins house for the day (with my newly fixed computer). i arrived back home that night and then i turned on the comp to get the error
"windows xp could not start because the following file is missing or corrup:
\windows\system32\config\system"
I was shocked as my comp did work at my uncles house and all of a sudden when i brought it home this error popped up. i researched about the problem and i found out its a corrupted registry or something. just wondering if anyone could help me out with this or give me some tips on fixing this problem

Do you use freeware programs and sites. K-Lite, Zango, Kaza, Bearshare, etc, etc... No matter how safe some think they are there full of viruses and especially trojans. Remeber anti-virus programs protect from what is known and not what is all out there, and sometimes do not notice questionable behaviors until your already tagged = thus, the registry problems. Registry errors can be cause by cookies, temp files, and site dl'ing hops that leave more then just a trail. Disk cleanup can't get to this you might have to delete them directly. Registry cleaners work (correction: can work), but place popup ads on your computer so don't try that. Question is how are you with codes? Post back if you know this so I can post answer. Or I have another alternative besides reformatting.

apparently you dont trust freeware much. k-lite isnt a type of trojan and neither is kazaa or bearshare. kazaa is coded with promotion popups in the 3rd byte of its memory. If you are so paranoid about registry, get a registry cleaner and if popups are an issue with your cookies and whatnot, get firefox and have it set to clean after the windows close. if you are so worried about freeware programs, i'll give you more to worry about. for example. the servers diablo uses releases a commercial type trojan every other hour. it looks like a little innocent banner but it leavs trails. Microsofts updates on auto which allows those cookies to enter through the same port. you can block those with black ice and have it set to paranoid.
I'm familiar with current and past codings. including the ethanol~.exe virus that has been floating around that changes its name into 8 different types which also is msvss.dll and exe formats. If you are still panicing about those things, get a decent setup like bitdefender with blackice, superadblocker, pcdoctor, registry fix5 and pest patrol. each have a piece in them that blocks different types of intruders including the newer ones since pestpatrol, superadblocker and pcdoctor self update with new stuff each day.
for the error on windows, when the format window comes up, you can just partition a chunk and add a new windows to it and run it from that instead of the normal one. it will load the system then you can set the original to disk check and allow it to fix the errors.
i usually use my old windows drive. its a 17 gig with only windows on it. if the harddrive errors, i just pop in the old one as master and then it fixes itself

do the windows setup like your going to install windows. but instead of deleting the partition, create a new one with around 10+gigs and install windows to it. it will start fresh but you'll still have your old stuff in the original part of the drive.
