Help with Tutorial

I need help with this tutorial! I've done it about 20 times and everytime it doesn't work, I have no idea whats wrong I'm doing it EXACTLY as it says... anyways I know a few people on this forum are really good with Photoshop and was wondering if they would help. The tutorial is here

I do as it says but... the lines(Layer name[sml_lines, med_lines, and lrg_lines] you'll see in the tutorial) they all just turn out white over top of the font... I'm using Photoshop 7, just wondering if someone could try the tutorial and see if yo can get it to work... maybe tell me what I;m doing wrong >_<
