could mars be terraformed?
#1
I was just watching a video in my science class it talked about transforming mars into a habitable planet with a process called "teraforming". And i ask could this be possible?

The surface temperatue is well below 0 Celcius.

Here is my hypothesis on what u coiuld do...(this will be interesting to see what u guys think would be good ideas to teraform mars)

Build several greens houses...Strong green houses that can withstand sand storms. And have seperate buildings to house astronauts. The green houses could grow plants that give off alot of oxygen with minimal resources taken. Than to thicken the atmosphere so it does get slightly warmer...althou this could be quite expensive, send Co2 from earth...I propose factories storing their Co2 emitions. Why Co2? Co2 is very heavy and reflects heat back into mars. Oxygen can come later when the planet is hot enough to get around 20 celcius. Badaboom. Water is melting on mars. Oxygen than comes because plants like algea would be introduced to the water. Than after i propose 500 or so years . Red skys would turn to Blue and a NEW EARTH...

ok thats my suggestion. wats ures.smartass2

hmm it would be great but i doubt we'll even see the beginning of this in our life times.

I do not think we will ever see this. Even if it did happen. Only the richest on the planet would be able to go. So even is Mars was terraformed billions would be left to die on this planet when it's time comes. I honestly think (of maybe just hope) that our civilization, as we know it, will be destroyed before we really do anything to save it.

Math...I sometimes wonder why you bother to post...that was completely retarded.

I agree it will not happen in our lifetime,as pointed out economics has a lot to do with it.
However I agree it is scientifically viable.

Dude that would never work. Thre's the whole temperature issue what with being all close to the sun and such. It would be one thing to try and warm up Mars but cooling Venus would be difficult as hell if not impossible.

just bring some plants in a dome with a heat control thing, and yeah, plants take in Co2 and give out o2 or whatever it is

Personally I believe we will easily have life on Mars in the future, we learn so much so quick, we invent new things.

Well I mean I looked up a few things NASA was doing I found it very interesting.
I think we will be on Mars sooner then you all know it.

the major problem with trying to terraform Mars is that it has no global magnetic field to protect it from the solar wind. any atmosphere you make will just get blasted into space.

there needs to be volcano's for it to work, volcano's help create an atmosphere, over a certain amount of time.

let me give u guys info on sum of ure comments..

VENUS CAN NEVER BE HABITABLE...the surface temp is well over 400 Celcius. Its thick Co2 atmosphere will be too heavy on any organic material anyways... And mars does have an atmosphere of Co2 and argon which are not toxic to inhale. I do agree on this however, we will not see any colonies or seomthing near it in our life times. maybe 3 generations after us..ofcourse after all this bullshit on war and polotics.

(edit),...Oh yea, mars has the largest volcano known its like 4 or 5 km up. mars has many volcanoes as do all inner planets.

This is true it does, however they(volcanoes) are not active atm. The most activity right now is not a planet but a moon that orbits Jupiter.

Mars has an atmosphere and signs of past free flowing water activity.
The largest deterent to terraforming it is money and politics.

I beleive it will happen eventualy ,but not in our time. Ares I look at that stuff too and your comment was in error and a little misguided.
