Who knows about computers?
#1
Ok my computer is a p.o.s and I want to know if I can put a whole new motherboard in it, if I can I want to know, im not paying for a whole new computer right now sense im going to college soon. Does anyone here actually know about computers, as in with parts? Like motherboards like what can fit in the computer. Anybody?

-Edit: So basically if I give you the info. about my computer, you could tell me what can go in it.

If your computer wasn't made by yourself in the beginning. It isn't likely that you can take the motherboard out of the computer. The store bought computers made it so there isn't many things you can interchange.

Thats not entirely true. But for the cost to change your motherboard out you might as well get a new case as well and start from scratch. If you change your motherboard and your computer is old. Odds are your going to want an upgraded one, which means a new processor. And if you have already gone that far your old ram wont really do your new setup justice. So theres that. And with the new mother board you'll most likely need a larger power supply so after you did all that you already got a new comp anyway. If you go a cheap route you can get out for around 500 bucks depending on where you live.

takezandgoez Wrote:I basically know what all of you are gonna think, OMFG why buy that? But its what I had the money for. Still running like new. If I cant do anything then **** it but I had 2 friends saying I could put a new motherboard in it and I could make it better.

My computer Info:

Intel® Desktop Board D865GVHZ Overview

CPU Type Intel Celeron D 335, 2800 MHz (21 x 133) 2.8 GHZ
Motherboard Chipset Intel Morgan Hill i865GV
Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (256 MB)
System Memory 1008 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
2 Hard drives: 80 GB 250 GB

More Info:

For the budget user, that is fine. But if you have a little more money you can easily upgrade your parts from this build. I had a Fx 5200 a year ago, and it costed me 50 dollars...A YEAR AGO.

$400-500 Imo creates a good computer that can do most things. I can't create a build for you right now, but I recommend putting your priorities like so.

#1 Cpu
#2 Graphics Card
#3 Memory (1Gb is enough if 2Gb becomes too expensive)
#3 Mobo
#4 Hard Drive
#5 Power Supply
#6 The rest

5 or 600 bucks will get you a new dual core processor computer. Whats funny though is I have a comp with a pentium 4 with 512 ram running linux and a computer with an athalon 5200+ X2 with 2 gb ram running vista and the linux computer does everything faster.

b/c linux does not require much to run.. vista is a resource bitch

the current video card you have, is it pci express or agp?
(open up your computer case, and look at where you plug in your monitor cable. now that card that is inserted into the motherboard. is it inserted into something white or brown?)

Its just a pci thats why i hate it, i think i had it posted before.

And kaze how can i get a new a cpu or a new video card without a new motherboard? I want to put a AMD in it. Amd = (FTW!)

Guys make sure you seen my motherboard i posted the link. There is no pci-express slot.

Basically i want to know what new motherboard i can put in it, cuz i have no idea what im looking for.

Pci express slot on that thing? It looks ancient. And super small. Motherboards can be as cheap as $90 dollars with a pci-express card. If you have $500 dollars for disposal it won't be a problem. Pci-express to me is standard, its not even a big deal. I just upgraded mine from 7300 Gt Pci-Express. To 7600 Gt. My dad who only plays Fifa 07 just handed me his card -_-. And I think a 7600 Gt is already outdated. My dads using the 7900GS OC Bfg.

So. If you want a new video card with Amd. You must get a new motherboard. You can throw your old one out. Or keep it as an antique.

I am not turning off my computer and putting in my 7600Gt after I read and see if people need my assistance in the thread about Moving Mp3 files =D.

or just switch to ubuntu linux lol I can run windows in a window with virtual box. So anything you need you can run on linux. If you want windows programs to run naturally in linux you can use wine. I havent found a program yet I cant run. Check it out here is my desktop. I run beryl so the cube has a desktop on each side and i can rotate between them.

Skip all of this hassle and go buy a shitty $500 prebuilt. If you don't know much about computers it is alot easier, and in your case will be faster then your current computer. Pentium D (dual core) computers will run you 450-600$ USD, and they are a shitload better then a Celeron. Or buy a AMD X2 3800 or 4000 or 4200 or w/e you can find for $500-600.

Ah yes that is correct. You really sound like you have no idea how to buy the parts, and putting it all together...

Prebuilt. Good call Dan.
