Apparently, if you've completed the "Elune's Blessing" quest previously and have an Elune's Lantern in your inventory, it seems that you will be unable to finish the quest a second time.
This was noted over on the World of Warcraft forums by Fichesi of Uther, who explained the problem and also mentioned that he had to go to Darnassus to delete the lantern he already had to finish the quest. He added,
The quest system should be modified so that it will give the rewards, minus the item you may already have in your inventory. It irritated me to have to go to Darnassus to delete the item, then return to Moonglade to complete the quest.
Blizzard representative Kisirani responded, saying that "this is something that can be easily changed, but we'll definitely keep it in mind." Kisirani further added in a later post on the thread that considerations such as these are things they'll be looking at when they revisit special world events such as these.
While it does seem like a minor thing, it's certainly something that needs to get fixed. We hope that next year's event won't be so problematic, and that other events of this kind get reviewed before they get put up on the site so as to remove the problems that may be inherent in them.
