For many a gamer, it's the sort of thing we hope won't be happening soon. According to Gezelle over at the World of Warcraft forums, there's a possibility that the Wrath of the Lich King expansion will require players to upgrade their system OS to Windows Vista.
Gezelle notes that the rumor stemmed froma discussion that took place with a friend currently employed at GameStop. Gezelle's friend had basically stated that with the way more and more PC games such as Shadowrun had been branded as Vista-only, it is then possible thatWotLK would follow suit. The good news is that according to an update from Nethaera, this prospect appears to be unlikely. Quoting the blue-poster's exact reply:
What I'm saying is that we are continuing to develop with as many users as possible in mind. I'm not going to call out any specifics since we haven't publicized any at this point in time. I couldn't tell you if any upgrades would be needed or not since it depends on your machine and what it can handle. The likelihood of us switching to any one particular platform after supporting what we do right now, would be very low. ;)
Tossing in my two cents, I doubt that Blizzard would make WotLK a Vista-exclusive either. Part of WoW's appeal is that it's playable even on lower-end machines. Limiting the game to run on one OS would certainly exclude a good portion of its population, which could in turn affect its cash flow.
