we have orb weaver spiders down in houston.
their webs are pretty massive, and very strong. the outer most strand, i have actually pulled it off and played with it. amazing stuff

Houston was bad with spiders but Alabama was worse.Some were so big you could here them walking at night.Just this morning a 4 inch one dropped on me and my son saved me as I screamed.
I had to change panties*cough* I won't say why.
